Will I be able to get good mixes in a 12x12 bedroom converted into a control room or should I just build on to the house? I'm moving my studio from a commericial space into my home and I'm wondering if a small space is worth the expense of treatment. I plan to build a proper facility on my property in the future but in the interim my studio will consume my home until I can afford the structure. It looks like this is a great resource for treatment and I'm excited to get started. I just want some opinions on small spaces in light of BBC recomendations in square footage of control room spaces. Any advice is welcomed! Thanks!
A square room is far from ideal, but you could help it quite a bit with a LOT of absorption if there's room for that PLUS your gear - however, if the ceiling is the standard 8 feet then you've got modal problems in all three axes. IF you're doing pro work and expect your mixes to translate, you'd probably be better off building from scratch so you can at least get decent room ratios, maybe even do an RFZ room with geometry instead of absorption. Are you planning on any surround work, or just stereo? Steve
Thanks Steve No, I am only doing stereo mixes currently. I suppose I'll do surround someday but not in this room. Yes, my ceiling is standard 8'. I recently did an independent release mix in this room without treatment and it took forever! It did finally translate but it wasn't easy. I've been recording for the past 7 years in a rented space (my rent was recently tripled so I'm moving it to my home for now) with decent treatment. I am planning on doing more "pro" work in the future but right now I want to learn more about acoustics and design a proper facility. I figure trying to fix something like this room I have now will be a good learning experience. I am planning on building some traps with OC 703 but I'm still not clear on how much square footage I need and how to figure what freqs will be problematic. And how to address specific freqs. I am starting to understand however with modcalc but I think I need to make one in excel my self to really get it. I hate math but here we go! lol What is an RFZ room? I will keep poking around on this site. i don't expect you to answer all my questions. Any tips would be appreciated, though. Thanks again. Matt
