I am helping a friend design a little studio. The space is 18.5' wide 25.5' long with 11.5' ceilings. It's setup with the one long wall open, boxed in by the 3 other walls. He wants a decent control room with a small area in back for a couch, maybe an 8x10 semi-live room and a comfortable vocal booth. I have been looking at the SAE "Studio 1" image but that is a tad too long to work. What can you recommend John?
Carl - I'd use the 18' dimension for the control room depth - 18' is a cool control room size - then use the rest of the space as a studio on one side out to the 25' mark. cheers john
Here's what my first impression is. What would you do differently John? BTW the width of the control room I sketched is 15'. I'd bring the bottom wall with the window in the vocal booth down towards the control room, but I can't figure out how to create trapizods with Illustrator.

Anyone?
Hi, how do you get into the vocal booth? Can you change it, so that you don't have to go through the liferoom to access the booth? Harald
Thru the door! :D There are 2 glass panel doors between the live room and vocal booth. There are sliding glass doors between the control room and live room.
Yes, i thought it is like this with the doors, but this way the singer has to go through the life room, falling over guitar amps, drums etc. to get into the booth... any chance to change this? Cheers Harald
There won't be any amps around, this guy only does rap and R&B. And if they do it's his own fault. My studio was properly designed by John (although never built) so I am not really worried about all of this guys place. I am just feeding him ideas. What he will do with them is up to him. But, that's why I am asking for ideas and help. I might be working for the guy a lot.
ok, talk him into buying a big SSL board... :D Things that come in my mind when working for other people: Try to be compatible to your own stuff, so you can take session stuff home and work on it Clear the budget first, so you see what is possible (i think you allready did it) The design itself looks ok to me, any changes are more or less personal favours I don't know if the windows from CR to booth might destroy the symetry (the speakers are on the right side of CR, right?), maybe you can/should change this?
