Preface: I’ve been reading posts on this site for over a year and have learned very much. I’m truly appreciative of this forum! I’m in the planning stages of building my first studio. How loud am I? Drums, guitar, bass – probably 125db. Neighbors are not very close – closest is about 350 feet away, others 500’+. My goal is to make it so upstairs in house (1st floor – 1 story house) is not disturbed by playing in basement. Existing construction: 2300 sq ft. ranch house, 10 years old. 8” concrete basement walls, 7-6” height from floor to main floor joists. 2x10 floor joists on 12” centers with “x” braces. Basement floor unknown thickness (I assume 4”) Typical floor above is plywood over joists with carpet or laminate flooring. Main floor is 2x4 walls, 9’ ceilings. Basement walls are parallel, ceiling height is consistent. Goal: This is only a hobby but I want a nice practice/play room and a nice sounding room to mix in. I want to be able to practice rock in the room without shaking things off the shelves in the house upstairs. I have friends that would like a place to record and I’ll probably do that here too. On the other hand, I won’t likely try to make a business of recording. Budget: I’m hoping to do this for $5,000 - $7,000 but if necessary, I could spend up to $10K - $12K. Construction plans: Planning on “room inside a room”, floating the floor, walls on floor and ceiling on walls. Ceiling joists will interleave floor joists to maximize ceiling height. I will be more than happy to go into construction details but right now I’m trying to do the design. I’m trying to best utilize my space and would very, very much appreciate any suggestions! Thanks John, Sharward! One question: John - in your drawings, you made the walls in the live room parallel - was that just for ease of drawing? I've been working on the 6 degree "rule" all along. Is it better to build structural (inner leaf in this case) walls parallel and then make the "angle" with some sort of absorbers or actually build the structure at an angle and later add sound treatments. I've been figuring on adding some Helmholz absorbers in the live room for sure. Rob
