Hi everybody,
a friend of mine is planing to build a studio and he asked me to help him a little bit with the planning. So I sat down and made a few sketches of what might be a possible solution.
As indicated in the topic the room is rectangular 7,28m x 6,20m and has a lot of doors and windows as you can see in the picture below. The height is about 3m (although I'm not sure about the exact value right now).
The goal is to get a control room and 2 or 3 Studios out of that room, where you have good sound isolation, which makes it possible to record e.g. drums and not hear much in the other room. The acoustics should also be really good, to make it possible not only to record in the studio but also use the control room as a mixing environment.
Right now there is a thin carpet on the foor and wooden panels at the ceiling, but we think about floating the floor and even build a false ceiling (angled?), to get a good sound isolation.
So my questions are:
1. What do you think about the two plans below? Which one is preferable (Plan01 is our favorite)? I tried to keep symmetry in the control room, but the one in Plan01 maybe not has the right proportions (length/width). The difficulty is, that you can't do it another way because there are doors and windows.
2. Maybe you have some good ideas for improvements or even completely other suggestions. My friend also suggested to remove the wall between Studio A and Studio B in Plan01, to have a even bigger recording room. But the Vocal Booth still is very small. Do you think it is big enough to get a natural voice recording?
3. The windows and doors cause a problem when trying to divide the room. The windows also destroy the symmetry in the control room. Do you think this is a big problem? Are there any possible solutions beside removing the windows?
4. Is it worth the cost to float the floor?
All measures in the plans are in cm.
Thanks!
Waldemar
Studio Plans for a Room 7,28m x 6,20m

Hi Waldemar - a variation on 2 would be this.

Wow,
that's a good idea. I didn't even think about not using the door at the bottom at all. This could be a good alternative.
What do you think about the very small size of the other recording room? I'm afraid, it will sound very boxy in there.
In general, is it better to have a control room, which has a bigger lenth than width?
Waldemar
The Wall angles eliminate a "boxy" sound which is directly related to a small square or small rectangle....
Hi,
I have discussed the various possibilities with my friend. There is one problem with your plan, John. I didn't write about it so You could not know it, but the door at the bottom is the one which leads to the main entrance of the building and ist is necessary to be able to use it, to carry musical equipment in and out of the studio. Although everything else is really fine, I'm afraid that it won't be possible to do it this way.
To your information here is an overview of where all the doors lead to:
1. the door at the bottom leads to the main entrance
2. the door at the left leads to a narrow corridor, which leads to a big room, which in the future may also be used as a recording room. From this big room you can also get to the main entrance.
3. the door at the right leads to the kitchen, which is also planed to be used as a painters atelier and possibly as a additional recording room if necessary.
Eventually we still stick to the first version, which we have modified a little bit. Maybe we can hear your comment about this? Or other possibilities.
