Low end and distance from speakers

Hi guys. It's been a long time since I posted here. Still my little mixing room isn't finished (didn't work on it for months) but I'm going to finish it very soon now! Right now there are only bass traps in the back of the room. I want to add traps on the ceiling and the sides. But first I want to build the soffits, but I'm not sure what design is best. Attached is one file which shows two plans: The first one my ears are around 1m from the back wall and the speakers are at a 60 degrees angle. The second drawing my ears are around the same distance (1m) from the front wall and the speakers are angled at a 90 degrees angle. I played pink noise and sinus waves and started to move around. It turns out that in the first plan (ears near the back, speakers at a 60 degrees angle) I hear the most low end (from 30hz and up). In the second plan I hear almost NO low end at the listening position. I switched the setup around, putting the speakers on left side of the drawing and my head at the right side of the drawing and I got the same results. So apparently I have to be at least around 1.8m away from the speaker to hear the lowest bass. Isn't that weird? Can someone explain me why it is/isn't? Which design should theoretically be better? Maybe the 2nd design would sound better when all the traps and soffits are in place? Maybe not?

hummm.... dont know why but. my HR824 were on the desk(next to the M5's) about 2.5ft away from my ears. but when i moved them back about a ft more, i was able to hear the low end better. http://mi2.bpcdn.us/nukmusic/DOS2005.JPG
