Okay, I now have enough money to make a serious go at building myself a small project studio.
As I've said before, I live out in the woods, nearest naighbor is a 1/4 mile away, and we have losts of land on which to put this building on, so I don't need to worry about isolating from the rest of the house so much.
I've been looking around, and I found a very cool looking wood shed/cabin type building. It's 16'x16' and two story, each is 8' high, with a Dutch Barn style roof. Total height is (I'm told) 18'.
My recording instructor is actually building his studio in the same building, bought from the same company, though his is larger.
I can get the basic stucture put up for about $7,000 U.S.
I've attached a picture of the type of building, and a preliminary floor plan.
There's a 90 percent chane, that I will cut them a check this week, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Ceiling height? Teh more you can getthe better, as that gives you room for acoustic treatment of the reoom sounds. Nice space. With a bit of design work you can meet most AES/CCITT/EBU recommendations for control room acoustics! :D

You mean, put the control room on the second floor, and the tracking room on the first floor? As for ceiling height, it's gonna be tight. The building itself has 8' ceilings. The top floor, actually goes a little higher, where the apex of the roof is, which is why I was going to put the main tracking room up there. Also, it would make it less obtrusive if some one walks in during a session (though I plan on having a "RECORDING" light up sign out side, to prevent just such an occurrance. I've been playing around with the design, trying to use some of the suggestions that John has made for me previously, but with this building design, I can't seem to get enough space for the stairs, and a door to the stairs with any other setup. Mabey I'm just not seing it right...Anyone have any other suggestions of how to set up this space?Put the control room on the first floor man and have the live room on the ground floor.
Seems to me the hang up with the structure is going to be the wimpy floor construction you're gonna get with it. Will it support the significant beefing up you're gonna need to do to get some amount of isolation between the CR and tracking room. A kick drum stomping on your head is would suck.
The Stock floors are 2"x10" on 16" centers. I would order the building with a reinforced floor, though. I may also check into what it would cost to add a foot to the height on both floors.
Because it's the first floor you come in contact with when you walk in from the outside. The second floor is the second one you come in contact with. On this side of the pond, ground floor and first floor are the same.
Of course, the above goes out the window if you have only one floor and a basement since the basement floor would be the second one you come to. Perhaps the -2nd floor? :-)
