Hello all, This is my 1st post on your boards, so please allow me to introduce myself. My name's Eric and I've been a recording engineer for about 8 years. I'm quite comfortable in any studio environment and can recognize the merits of a well tuned or "good" room vs. a "bad" one, but beyond putting a workstation in a room and building some insulation stuffed "couds" for walls and ceilings, I'm very new to studio design. Here's my situation: I have a client who is a contractor. He owns rather sucessful electrical and drywall businesses. For some crazy reason he wanted to get into the music business and started an independent label about two years ago. Since then his artists have already landed major label deals and everyone's itching to build our own studio. As the engineer of choice, I've been asked to help find the right people to help with the job. Having spent much of my career in NYC, I don't really know any local studio designers. Having a local design team is very important to us though. We've got a 7000sq ft free standing building with parking, 72 channel SSL in storage and my boss is itching to get started right away. Here's the details: #1 We want a great sounding room and solid design #2 We won't pay tens of thousands of dollars for a flashy Bau:ton style rendering and blueprints. #3 My client wants to use his own construction crew (I know, this will require constant supervision) #4 We already have someone very well qualified and experienced to do our wiring and commission the board, the emphasis will be on good room acoustics and isolation. #5 ...Don't get me wrong, we're not cheapskates either, but I'm trying to be as brief as possible with my descriptions ... my client does understand the kind of time and money that are involved in building a "real" studio and mix room. Having said that, does anyone know any chicago area designers/builders/carpenters with studio experience who can check out our existing space, come up with a basic room and HVAC layout scheme that we can use as a starting point? Any names, numbers, websites appreciated. I'll be happy to supply more info if anyone needs it. I'll be checking back frequently. By the way, this BB is an awsome source for information that I couldn't possibly hope to understand and retain, but thanks to everyone contributing. :D
