I am building my own home project studio and was wondering if i could get some suggestions on layout. i have already poured the slab 18 x 24. It is not big enough but neither is my wallet. This will be a place for a full on band practice as well as lots of recording projects. here is my dilema I would like to have 3 rooms inside for mix , drums , and vocals. Is this even possible in this tight of space and if so is a decent sounding building still possible.? It doesnt have to be top notch but i would like it to be adequate. The front door will be on the 18' side and the only other opening will be for a window unit(i know they are loud but money is a real issue here). I will probably also have an inside electrical panel but dont have to. I figure it will be a little more sound proof with less holes in the wall. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jeff
Just thought i would add another idea . Any one ever have any luck with partitions. Maybe i could just leave it open and partition everything if needed. I still think i should get some good isolation for the vox.
Hi jeff - do you have a drawing showing where you want the door and any windows? cheers john
the door doesnt matter as long as it is on the 18' wall. the only other hole will be for a window unit and that just depends on the layout. right now i just have an 18x24 slab so anything is possiblr from there.
here's a start cheers john

not bad , the entrance door would have to turn and be on the adjacent wall. would that drum room also act as a live room. dimension wise(aka is it big enough?)
i like this layout but i have no idea if it will work with my area dimensions of 24x18. and i would move the door and delete the water utilities.
oops i guess im too retarded to upload a photo

what i mean by door doesnt matter, is that as long as it is on the 18' wall i can locate it anywhere. the other sides of my slab have a hurricane fence. the way the pictures showed, the door would have been on the long wall. I really like that 2nd layout picture with the door coming into the dru/live room. my question is really in a 24x18 configuration, the rooms would be scaled down fairly small. Would they still be able to be setup properly for a good sound? I think if you print the picture it will be 1/4 inch equals a foot or close to it.
can anybody tell me if this layout is acoustically and maneuverability feasible withing my dimensions

thank you . that helps alot. im a CAD dummy. could you by chance add the room dimensions to the drawing? my goal is a place to have band practice as well as decent recording capabilities.
here you go - download the smartdraw demo and you can get all the dimensions off it. cheers john

ok it will be tight but it will work. next question i know i am gonna lose a little more space. where would my acoustic treatments go ?
oh i edited out the window in the drum room so that may effect the acoustics.

can someone give me a guesstimate on the cost of materials to build this layout? all i have is a slab 18 x 24. I will need doors, roof , windows , etc. Everything to make the shell . i can figure electrical and hvac my self but im kinda vague on construction material and i plan on doing the work with friends and family so no labor cost added please. My budget is about 5k total but if i could do it for half that i could start alot sooner.

could someone tell me if i can build this structure for under $5k. Just materials
Not even close. I'm not sure what construction costs are exactly in your area, but in most area's it'll cost you around $35-$50sf for materials. That'll put you closer to $20,000.
well i guess my next question is what can i build for under $5k?
Just to be clear, all you have is a concrete slab? I'd say go get a loan and do it right. You wouldn't even be able to get a solid room with a roof on it for that.
this is a backyard personal space and i would love to maybe make a little money here and there but $5k is a stretched budget already. can i even make a one big room setup for that price. I already have little things like shingles and a front door but i will never recoup 20k and i would have to add a bedroom if i attempted to. My wife would use my life insurance policy to pay it off.
Well just having a slab means you can build as tall as you want so I'm here to ask how tall are you wanting to make the ceiling inside the space? I'm askin cause I have a program that can do a materials list you just have to get pricing from your area on things email me so we might talk in more detail. And we will see what kind of price we can come up for you (hopefully within your budget) I actually started workin on the material list for you but the damn computer froze up and I lost my spreadsheet so I gotta start over again.
