Hi folks
I have a shell of a building that is 6 meters by 8 meters. I have ordered roof trusses and hope to have the roof on by early August.
So I am keen to settle on a layout.
I know the advice is not to have rectangle shaped control rooms and I am not disputing the reasons why. I like the designs I have seen here but from looking at them it seems to me that I would have to use 2 thirds of my entire space to get a good size, correctly shaped control room.
Have a look at my current layout idea.
With regards the control room, I am looking for a lot of work space around me. I have two LCD displays for pro tools. I have a mixer that is only used to feed pro tools and is not needed in front of me.
I want a keyboard to the side of me for composition when I am working alone. At the same time I want a chill area in the control room for guests or myself when I just want to just listen to music and have a beer.
It terms of potential acoustic problems I was going to angle the ceiling above the control room sloping up away from the mix position and use acoustic products like Auralex to treat the back wall and sides. I do want to create a good mixing environment but I am not trying to create a state of the art mathematically designed mastering room.
The live room will be used for acoustic instruments such as Guitars and other stringed instruments and I will have a wooden floor which has always provided me with great results in the past. The drum booth is a good size for comfort and the vocal booth can also be used for instruments and could easily take two people without feeling cramped.
I have racked my brain to think of the best way to use the space I have.
This is my best layout so far but I ask you guys what potential problems it might create. I am on a very limited budget. I've a roof to finance as well as external and internal doors. I have budgeted for double stud walls for the control room and double layers of plasterboard packed full of rock wool everywhere. The drum booth will be room within room idea. The floor is currently a concrete slab. I think my budget will cover the materials. I don't have any labour costs.
I'd appreciate any advice on the layout.
Cheers
Layout and Rectangle control room

I am nearing completion of my roof, anyone have any thoughts? Would really appreciate any advice
Is the space just a big empty room right now or are the interior walls built as well?
Hi It is just one big empty room. As soon a s I complete the roof and a few other bits I start the inside. Is the space just a big empty room right now or are the interior walls built as well?
Sorry, my apologies for not presenting my post to the expected standard. I did try to follow the instructions, was just really looking for some input on using this space. I will try again:http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231
I did but could not find a space similar to mine. Rectangle control rooms seem to be taboo here but as I already stated what about using additional treatment to reduce the obvious problems one might expect? I post because I was after help with layout ideas, the above layout pic tells you what I want in this space.Use the search feature to look for threads that may contain the answer to your question.

Without repeating myself too much here are the basics: Have outbuilding at back of house without roof. It was an unfinished garage/workshop started by the previous owner build of single wall of block. 8 by 6 meters, good concrete base, reasonable construction. I started roof construction last month. It has a pitch roof now with slates which I have almost completed. Next stage is to close up the gable ends with additional blocks then to install window and door making the building water tight and ready for the internal construction.Start your post with an overview of your goals and where you are in the process... Research? Planning? Construction already underway? Finished, and wanna know why it doesn't work?
, I have a detached house in a quiet rural location. Neighbors are cool. I live near a road which has some low level traffic. Keeping sound out of the studio is priority. Its detached also and I feel I have quite a bit of flexibility with regards making noise.HOW LOUD are you
See aboveInclude as much detail as possible about the existing construction.
Ive 75 sheets of plasterboard and studding on site. The block work has studding attached all around the parameter of the internal walls. No ceiling, just roof trusses. Concrete floor.Having details about anatomy of your existing floor, walls, and ceiling is critical.
See above, ignore the 800cm = 8 metres.Include drawings of what you're describing if at all possible.
I did that one :)Please resize as necessary to keep graphics UNDER 800 pixels, preferably under 750, wide; otherwise it forces people to scroll sideways to read every line of text.
This post is a mess now, sorry.Group your actual questions last, and put each question in its own paragraph. This makes it easier to respond to each of your questions.
Well I'd love to get some feedback on my layout, just the layout. Mainly wanting to know if anyone has any ideas of a better use of this space to get a good size control room, live room, drum booth & vocal booth....and finally... Please be patient.
Was about $10000 but I have spent most of that now on the roof and materials. I've around 3-4000 left which must cover internal doors, control room window, flooring, electric cable and studio wiring/lights etc and a few other things. One more point you need to include - Budget
Toerag,
No flames here, just trying to help...
