I just read somewhere on this site that diffusers are a bad idea if they are less than 10-12ft from the mix position? Is that correct? I am building a new control room that is approx. 13.5 ft x 16ft. The speakers are facing the longest way down the room. The floor will be hardwood. I'm planning a liberal amount of 705 but I do not want the room too dead. The walls are parrallel and I don't have room to move them much. I hope to splay them as much as I can, but it may not be enough. Would diffusers on the side walls be a be idea since they are close? Also: How much angle is required on splayed walls to gain any significant benefit? Thanks! Scott

Misleading. Teh number is corect for the commercially made difuser that the author was referring to. It has ben quoted too much out of context. Difusers start to show lobing at frequenicies whose wavelength is greater than 3 times the distance from the diffuser.

Vageue question as you have defined "good". Acoordign to current recommendations, there should no early reflections int he first 15 mc less than 10 dB down. Diffusers will not do that full range in your setup.

Use the mirror image technique in looking at teh layout. 12 degrees works out to tbe the usual figure, but dot he analysis. If you down't to loose that much space ont eh sides, you can dogtooth, or setp, teh splayed walls. Good luck! Andre
Andre, Thank you for your help. I was at a real quandry about that statement (close diffusers). You helped clear that up. I'll take a look at the room. I was seriously hoping that a dogtooth setup would work, but 12 degrees isn't much, so maybe I can do that instead. Thanks again, Scott
Good luck Scott! Andre
here is a solution that seems to be roughly the size you're looking for using dogtooth (if you decide to). http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm I'm having a similar dilemma, small multi-functional space which I don't want to lose too much of. Cheers -Drew
