ok i'll bite ...
i'm no expert, please understand, but one thing i DO know is that you want symmetry as much as possible on both sides of your listening position.
i think you can do better than what you've proposed (symmetry wise). i can see you have alot of obstacles to work around though.
i think that it's more important to have symmetry forward of your listening position than behind. so maybe you can work out a compromise that takes that into account.
my .02 ... i'm sure others can comment better on this tho.

Dude - what are all the CD blocks in your drawing along the top wall??
anyway - here's a possible way of doing it.
cheers

This is very fustrating for me. That design is neigh on perfect if this was 'my' studio.
Unfortuntaly part of the deal of setting up the studio in my parents house is that it's still accessiable by the family.
The CD blocks are just CD racks to contain our 4000 odd cds and a few vinyls. Also a B&O TV must be visible from the sofa so you can still watch TV in there
Also on top of that the wall behind the desk doesn't work as the block to the left of it contains the boiler which opens towards the desk.
*sigh*
Thanks for all you help guys, i really appriciate the time you've spent helping me.
I'll keep thinking about it and i'll see what i can come up with.
If anybody does have any more ideas, suggestions i'd love to hear them.
Drummer dude - if you were to build what we've discussed, and you were to introduce your family to the space you've created - I seriously doubt they'll object - they'll take over your room and blast their DVDs on your system and reckon your room is the best sounding room "in da house"!!
Move the door to the boiler, put the CDs on shelves above your gear on the right wall, or use them in the studio area as wall diffusors..... do whatever you have to do.................it's going to be your room because you put your stamp on it :)
cheers

Ok, hows this as an alternative idea? the cd racks can be placed in the live room.
Then the TV can be put immediatly to your left as you walk in the door?
How is this acoustically? We can't move the boiler doors as it needs to be accessed and it cant fit in any other way. So the doors have to stay where they are.
Also the bigger the live room i can get the better, so i can still practice with my bands in there.
So does this idea work acoustically?
the slat wall that i have in the live room...can i hang guitars on it?
Or is this totally defeating the point of having one, even if i could get the wall to hold them?
Ok, What if i change the room around...
so the angled wall is on the other side, with a bass trap?
Yup, im just guessing, and yes i have no idea whats going on, but im just moving walls around until something looks about right.
guys?
Is this final design ok?
I want to start building it asap.
looks pretty rough there DD. You don't want any parallel walls at all, and your CR is not going to work very well for mixes.
What again didn't you like about Johns?
