In a basement with 7' high ceilings, in another post, John said:
a ceiling height of 7' is best treated totally with 703 to wipe it out completely. BTW a ceiling that low is also better if you cover it with a dark color (black) - it makes it appear higher than it really is. cheers John
So if I have an existing ceiling layer, do I first add an additional layer of drywall, then 703 and that would really "wipe it out" so that the room will sound ok ? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. -John Lehmkuhl [/quote]
It depends what the "existing" layer is made/comprised off. If its a dropped ceiling then just rip it out. Drywalled then may it can stay, maybe go. Does *soundproofing* matter or is this only for sound treating

It's really for both - I want to make a great sounding room and isolate it as much as I can from the rest of the house without doing the room-in-a-room approach. Sounds like I'll just rip it out. Thanks for your advice. -John Lehmkuhl
Well I want to know as well, now. If he were to just slap up a layer or two of sheetrock on the bottom of his cieling/second floor joists then put a layer of fabric-covered 703 over that, would he be able to get a decent monitoring situation out of this? If he were able to strip his mix room cieling down to the joists, that is. What would be the best way to deal with this situation?
You've basically got two options here depending on the isolation you want. If you use the exposed joists you can seal off the upstairs like the attached pic. If you require more isolation you will need to add the second drywall layer on RC channel as per the other attached pic. To then cover the drywall with insulation the final attached pic offers one solution. cheers john

If this seems confusing, remember that the board's software REVERSES pix order; so consider as if John had posted the bottom pic first, then the middle, then the top one (this "quirk" usually catches me too...) BTW, the only DECENT isolation of these is the MIDDLE pic; the bottom one would help SOME, but has only one mass leaf. It would, however, SOUND better in the room - the alternative, if you need BOTH iso and good sounding space, is even LESS headroom (a cloud below the bottom resilient mounted wallboard)... Steve
