I have a 28' x 22' separate garage. Ive been working on my design for the last 4 months. While determining my best approach, my overall floor plan has changed often. Now that I think I have a plan for my garage I find myself rethinking floorplan. For detailed info read my string http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... highlight= Early on I saw examples of corner control rooms (like at the SAE site) The trouble I have is the right dimensions and a realistic understanding of what any trapping and absorption will do to my room size. Id love to know a method to design a corner control room properly. The room will probably be in top left corner?
After some shape shifting, I think this design maybe be even better than a corner room. Its wastes less area and gives more area in room, but how much will i lose to absorption. then I can determine if its really bigger. Ihavent figured out how to post pics right so top pic is pic2 and bottom is pic1
Corner control Room Question

Top pic isn't symetrical Mike, but you may be onto something in general... Steve
ya it should be but i was being very general
I havent posted here in a while, but I need some Control Room advice bad..My studio post is http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... highlight=
My confusion is based upon assumption Ive made Im not sure of..
1)How much isolation do I need from the rest of the world? Does my Control Room need to be decouopled? Would a coupled room with 3 layers of drywall be enough?
2)Ive seen rooms on this sight that are square, and the splaying is created by acoustical treatments. Ive also seen rooms with the splaying being created by the actual room. Is there a preferred or is it just have to do with layout.
3)I saw thic CR by John Sayers today...its here..http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3752
Its coupled AND non symmetrical, is this OK, what are the downfalls of both not coupling and not symmetrical?
If I can get the control room soundproof enough with coupled construction, then it will be much easier/cheaper to build and bigger.
Theres some fundamentals about control rooms Id like to clear up. First, I thought you were doing your drawimgs quickly and I totally understand why. As for your suggestion, I think you misunderstood me, as my control rooms front is at the bottom.(see the picture in this thread) I have 16 degree splay and its a little more than 15' wide and a little more than 14' long. Also I wish it were so easy to get rid of the beam, but its structural and as far as I know a pretty major undertaking to remove. Beyond it is the new extention, which is well built but not strong enough to be the end wall. I had once had my control room similar to this and asked if I hang clouds to meet the beam would this be OK and you said yes. Its like a played ceiling I guess. There are alot of obsticles in this design, most of which Ive created myself, but there here.Say La V. I guess Id like to define the principles and also prioritze them so I can get the best room possible.
My goals in this studio is to have good isolation and a control room that sounds good as is as large as possible. Id also like to have the live room as alrge as possible. I dont have alot of Iso Room needs and the single walled room I have is totally acceptable. I dont need windows or any other stuff, Its all sound and size for me. I need to know the following....
1)I know plays need to be at least 6 degrees(12 total) but whats the optimum splay degree? Whats too little?Whats to much?
The minimum is 12 degrees (6 a side) IMO BUT it need only go as far as the listening position as it’s aim is to direct right speaker sounds away from your left ear so once it passes you it doesn’t apply.
2)Ive remember learning you want 10' behind you and 10' to either side to let the bass waves complete. I think we both know that aint happening. So, if it cant be that big, is it still good to have it as big as possible? Whats better long or wide, if you have to choose? If you had a shallow back, how do you deal with it? and is it as effective? If you have it more narrow than long, how do you deal, and is it OK?
Yes the longer the better from that aspect.
3)You said its OK for the unsymetrical bass traps, but im still unclear on what is optimum. Im also a freak about stuff I dont totally get, and a unsymmetrical room just trips me out. Is it like a unsymmetrical room is treatable, but a symmetrical room is better, or is it better to have it unsymmentrical?
The idea of symmetry is so each speaker sounds the same as it’s in a similar geometry. That specifically applies to the front geometry. The rear geometry isn’t so locked in, (I’m talking stereo not 5:1) in fact I’m beginning to believe unsymmetrical rear sections are in fact better.
Practically every symmetcrical control room I’ve built and been in has a bass lift at the rear of the control room compared to the listening position – I believe it;’s cause by the splayed walls moving the bass modes to the rear of the room. I got rid of it in Guruland with the rear slot as it broke the rear bass up and stopped the peak from happenning but it takes up a lot of the rear space – Blue Bear has it too and it also works there and again takes up space. So I’m beginning to think that if you break up the rear with angles you can also stop the low end peak.
4)My design provides for a large CR and a large Live Room(as least as I can get them). Is there a certain size a live room has to get before that even matters? I dont need many Iso rooms, but am I making the live room as large as I can for no reason? If I had a foot to move a wall, in my situation which room is it more benificial to make larger the CR or the LR?
5)Ive been studying the construction of this pretty hard, and honestly, I havent really studied the whole bass trap thing yet. I know oyu want 30 degree angled corner traps up front and is it 60 degrees back ? Basically, Id like to know, presuming when Im done building Ill do an in depth study of this, what sizes am I looking at for optimum bass trapping? What are the sizes of thinner versions(like 4" of rigid insul along wall) and how much better or worse do they work?
6) assuming everything is best the way I have it, would it be better to straighten my front wall of my CR(bottom) or leave it symmetrical?
7)Are those sliding doors you always draw, as good as wall and a solid swing door for ISO. SLiding doors are expensive and if they provide lass Isolation and/or weird reflective properties, Id opt for swing doors. If they were good and I didnt have to buy super special ones Id consider slurging on them. What do you think?
Well obviously I like sliding doors as they give enough isolation and good visual – it’s a matter of tase IMO.
I feel if I had these kind of fundamentals I can make sure I get the best of both worlds. For instance, if I can have a wide but shallow control, or long and narrow, I can have a bigger live room. If the potential of my live room isnt gonna get big enough to matter, than Ill give it to the CR.
Id really appreciate some help here, Im tired of tring to ensure certain things happen that may not even be important..
I can’t help you much more than I’ve done already – this site has all the info anyone needs. we can't afford the time to give individual classes.
Cheers
john
thanx for your answers john. I really like your ideas but I dont think you know about my perticular sich enough. Like the beam cant go. its structural, at least on my budget. And theres that outcropping of cement lip and the studs holding up the beam, I have to work around. Its funny how this extention haas been so hard to work around, for giving me more space. Ive been through this alot, flipping things around, and I really like my generaL plan right now, and I think for better or worse, Im gonna stay with it generally. However I posted 2 version, Id like to get a basic opinion on. its basically the corner. I really think splaying the roof down to the beam with clouds, with my framed, angled mirror image will be the best way I can deal with this beam. Im always up to any suggestion, of course, but if this will work Id love to keep it this way. I am open to the back wall but I dont want to lose more live room. The blue lines are a really rough sketch of what id like to do with bass traps, when complete.
thanx again for all the help
mike
Mike, you need to trim those images down. It may not look it, but those images are 1,292 pixels wide. The transparent sides need to be sliced off.
sorry, I dont know why its big like that, it never was before.
