Anyone know? I have a wacky idea. :)
vinyl insect screen: acoustically transparent?

Yeah - transparent to all but the extreme high frequencies.

Considering it as the final layer for my fabric ceiling, since it will pull very, very taut, possibly requiring no (or few) staples.
Good idea? Bad?
Yeah - it should work - I've used plastic shade cloth also - (the stuff they make plant shadehouses out of) - it's cheap, comes in 12' wide rolls and a few colours. :)

Great! The ceiling is going to be my basement rafters full of 3.5" R-13 (I had a garage full of it, so it won out over 703), a layer of black polyester batting to keep fiberglass shed out of the room, and a final layer of black vinyl insect screen. Initial tests indicate this should be a very classy looking "cloth" ceiling! Hopefully, I'll get the bass absorption I need out of the R-13.
I'll post pics soon.
