Just wondering as I need a spot for a 2200V UPS whose input is a L5-20P.
Thanks in advance!
Can a 20A/125V Duplex be converted to L5-20R??

If the subject title is the questio, then yes you can do it.

Yes, I have an extra 20A/125V duplex receptacle behind my Pro Tools rack and would like to use it for an on-line 2200V UPS(MGE Pulsar EX RT) whose input plug is L5-20P.
Is it just a matter of removing the existing 20A and installing a L5-20R??
If so, is there any special wiring involved since L5-20R are single receptacles, right?? I'm not sure....
Thanks in advance!
In reading your posts you talk about a 20A/125V receptical and a 220V ups (i assume 2200v is a typo). if that is the case then simply changing the connector in the receptical will only yeild a 20A/125V L5-20 twistlock receptical. in order to get 220V you need to run a wire from a 220V breaker that carries the two 125V legs + a ground, rather than one 125v wire a neutral and a ground as in a normal 125V outlet. Please check with a licensed electrician.
Sorry, the UPS is 2200VA. So I guess you too are saying simply converting the 20A/125V duplex with a single L5-20R will work fine. If not please correct me. Thanks again.
What's the model of this UPS and a link or specs if you got it.
Your 2200VA or 2.2KVA is amperage not volts.
Since everything seems to be 125v 20a then you should be able to replace the receptical with an l5-20. make sure to wire it correctly. Typical the bent pin is ground the brass is hot and the silver colored pin is nuetral. they are wired similarly to a regular outlet ie if you hold up both recepticals the wires appear in the same positionswith the ground pin down
Aaron, here's a link to the characteristics page. It's the 2200VA model.
Sorry, I forgot to paste in link: http://www.mgeups.com/products/pdt120/1 ... haract.htm

OK,
Here's my question. Do you require 110V or 220V for your equipment your plugging into this unit?
It appears the input/output of this unit are single phase 120v, both input/output.
Basically you just need the L5-20 Receptical (20 amp & 120V).
Besides a Mac G5 tower, the rest of the gear being plugged in consists mostly of Digidesign Pro Tools HD hardware(192 I/Os, PRE, Midi I/O, SNS Fibre Drives, etc..) which is auto power selecting(100V-240V). As I said earlier, the electrician is putting in a few 20A/125V duplex receptacles throughout the room. So I gather I can just remove one of the 20A/125V duplex receptacles(where UPS will be located) and replace it with a L5-20, correct?? Anything else I need to be aware of??OK, Here's my question. Looka t all the info that you have recieved and are still not clear on what to trained person is a simiple straightforward proces. Electricity, if done wrong can kill. Get the electrician that you already have coming in install the L5-20 receptacle. AndreAs I said earlier, the electrician is putting in a few 20A/125V duplex receptacles throughout the room. No, actually I thought from the beginning that this was just a "straight forward" replacement. I just never received a "straight forward" yes or sure. That's all I was really looking for. In not being an electric guy and not having to deal with electric issues for the most part, I assumed asking an expert here would just assure me that my assumption was correct.
Thanks to all who took the time to respond.
Read my first post in this thread. Teh lack of clarity in your post was the vagueness I had to work with. AndreNo, actually I thought from the beginning that this was just a "straight forward" replacement. I just never received a "straight forward" yes or sure.

Topic title/question: Can a 20A/125V Duplex be converted to L5-20R??
Yes, I see your first post acknowledged this, although I still don't see how I could have asked this question any other way than how I did, except not mentioning that it was a receptacle change out. Either way, thanks for the responses.
The L5-20 shouldn't be any different to wire than a regular outlet. The brass colored screw will be hot (black), the silver colored screw neutral (white), and the green screw (ground).
Just kill the breaker and take meter to the outlet before disconnecting the other outlet.
Or, as Armondo said, if the electrician is there to wire up some outlets, just let him do it.
