I currently have a one room studio which is located above my garage. The wife and I are thinking of adding on to the back of house and I an hoping to get a studio redesign out of the deal.
Here's my current setup with layout and Cross section view.
We are in the process of getting an Architect or 2 to suit down with us and discuss/develop some plans.I'm thinking o fknocking the back wall(far left in the cross section view)and trying to get much more ceiling height maybe 10-14ft ?and extend that end of the room by several feet lengthwise and use it as a tracking room/space .Then relocate the"control room"/space to the opposite end.
I kinda like the one room setup but I think a good sized tracking room with a separate control room would be cool as well.
Any rough ideas on redesign and any optimal room dimensions I should be shooting for when talking with the Architect?
Need help... where to begin?

anyone?
It's hard to understand what extension you are looking at without a proper drawing of it.
here's how I would treat what you've got.
it looks different when you put objects in scale.

Thanks a ton John,
Actually my room is setup similar to your sketch.
What I'm really needing help with is how to "rough design" a build out/add on to my existing studio.
What I'm thinking off doing after meeting with my Architect is to extend the North wall(left wall in your sketch, behind desk) another 10 feet or so and raise the ceiling on the same side of the room.I think I can get the ceilings to 14-15 feet .As it stands now the south wall(Right side in your sketch)would remain the same.
The Architect is drawing some rough plans as we speak but I'm trying to give him as much input as possible esp. in regard to ?optimal?room dimensions acoustically speaking.I think once I get some dimensions worked out I can work on the layout in more detail.
Thnaks again for your input.
Here are some architect plans..first attempt.
There are 2 pdf files. One shows layout("Recording studio" room should be labeled control room) and the other a side/elevation view showing proposed roofline.
I'm currently in a one room setup and am a little unsure about going to the two room setup.I've enjoyed the vibe of the largish one room setup and wouldn't be opposed to keeping things sans control room but in the long run it's probably a better idea to go with 2 rooms. There is likely going to be enough space to set up a small iso booth or 2.
My architect I believe got the dimensions from an Everest acoustic book for what that's worth.
I'm not sure where to go from here re optimal layout and optimal dimensions??
I don't won't to sink a ton of money into this but hell I already kind of am, so I might as well end up with a nice space.
Any ideas/thoughts appreciated.

Solidering on...
Here's a revised floor plan of what I'm looking at.
My thought is to have a partial wall and create a mixing alcove.I could possibly supplement the wall length wise with a Gobo or Max wall type thing to create a Mix/Control room. The mix area for now is located at the back end of the studio.
Not sure how feasible this is or Acoustical issues I would run into with a partial wall/gobo setup??
here's your latest drawing - IMO it's not a studio - it's an upstairs play room. there is nothing in the plan that follows any acoustic rules, all walls are parallel, there's no wall treatment or anything that resembles an acoustic treatment.
cheers
john
Fair enough.
These are just the basic sketches to use a footprint.I haven't gotten to Acoustic treatment issues just yet,I'm trying to more or less finalize the floor plan before diving into treatment plans
.
I'm trying to keep the one room concept and as open as possible.
John do you have any opinions on the partial wall/gobo idea for a mix area?
Any thoughts or improvements on the general layout?
Thanks
