Ok, here goes. My very first small step into the world of studiodesign.
We are two guys from Norway planning to build up a little studio. It's not a dead serious project, but we're hoping for a decent sound with a small budget. Maybe around 1500$ or so (one beer costs 8$ in Norway just to get a picture of the currency :) )
The location of the place is a cottage in the woods, with few, but resident neighbors. I dont think its necessary with an absolute soundproof enviroment, but a little reduction is required.
I have used the last coupple of days reading this forum(and others) trying to get a picture of the howtos. So now I'm ready for your comments on my plan! Rip it apart and rebuild it if its necessary. Its easyier to redesign on paper then in timber!
The west and south wall of the studio is outerwalls. I've put up battening via neoprene and with 60mm space between them onto the existing wall. Filled it with Rockwool. Then added resilient bars to the battening and plasterboard to that. Do this have any effect? Or is it just a waste of money?
As you can see the new walls covers the existing windows. Anything else to do other than stuff the windows with insulation?
I've done nothing to the other walls, they are leading in to sourounding rooms wich are not in use.
Nothing special with the floor, just carpet. When it comes to the ceiling I'm a bit uncertain. Is it tabu to put up eggcartons? Or is it better then nothing?? I haven't seen much debate on that subject.
Corner and wall absorbers are build from John Sayers design.
I'm not quite certain what to do with the vocalbooth, and also not sure if its going to be glassdoors(went a little crazy with SketchUp...)
Oh! And the measures!
Studio : 469cm * 278cm (184,7inch * 109,5inch)
Controlroom : 338cm * 207cm (133inch * 81,5inch)
Vocalbooth : 266cm * 138cm (104,8inch * 54,4inch)
Thats it for now, looking foreward to see you tearing it all apart saying, "No, thats not gonna work!!" Thats the reason we haven't started building yet

Will this work?

Sure, cool program by the way. Maybe I have to buy it after the trial!
Ehh.. It won't be added. To big! Will but it on my webspace tomorrow!
Ok, here it is SketchUpStudioPlan
you need to get away from the rectangular room shapes.
try something like this.

Thanks!
But is it possible to angel just the inner walls? (We have no opportunity to tear down the existing walls) If so, should I fill the gap with insulation or just live it for air?(or would that just be a sort of basstrap and mess it all up?) Rememebr I have no other possibilitys, so if it wont work I'm going to need a way to make it as good as it gets!
Hey! I see windows! can we really keep them?? Isn't they really bad for both the acoustics and the soundreduction?
I assume that the rest is ok then? I mean with the absorbers and traps? And the eggcartons? Ok, I know I nag! We're just so ready to start building!
Really thanks alot for this great forum!!
I guess its not many studios in Norway with a John Sayers design!! 8)

Just my humble advice... ;-)
Don`t ever ever ever install eggcartons, because it looks like shit!
The carpet will absorb the highs so don`t absorb highs on the ceiling as well. The room would probably sound to dead.
When you want diffuse and absorb some mids/low mids (that`s how eggcartons are supposed to work, don`t they?), why don`t you apply some of John`s slat-absorbers on the ceiling? You can tune them to your special problem frequencies so they absorb those and diffuse as well. Easy to build. Just search in the forum (slat/slot absorbers...) or look in the reference section - no problem.

Schroeder
If you can't remove the wall why not try something like this.

Get your point Schroeder! Will drop them right away! And I will definitively go for the slatabsorbers. tnx To the design. First of all. I don't understand how you find time to all us stupid beginners John! You rock! Then the one little detail I didn't mention. Really sorry to waste that time of yours I just talked about, but I forgot to say that It should be room for a drumset in the liveroom.. It seems that I can't get a good solution for both the liveroom and the controlroom. It's just to little space! And I reckon a drumset need some space, I mean you can't record drums in a wardrobe could you? Or would the controlroom from my first drawing do? It's approx 338cm*207cm(11'*6,8') Again, I'm really sorry if I have wasted your time John. I really should have metioned it before. -LeifDon`t ever ever ever install eggcartons, because it looks like shit!
treated properly there's no reason why you couldn't record drums in the right room - the latest version also gives you visuals into both rooms and a much better control room size and shape.
cheers
john
Yeah, we really liked the new control room layout!
Ok, I really think we will go for that last one. (or the second if the landlord let us move the wall) Then I guess we'll just have to start the treatning process.
Thanks alot John! You have made to people on the other side of the world very happy!!
We shall hang up a plate that says: "A John Sayers Design" on the wall!
-Snorre&Leif
Cool - I'd go with 3.
here's the file

What program was used to design the room?
j...
Here's the link to Sketchup... http://www.sketchup.com/try/windows_download.php
Thanks,
Yesterday was my first visit to this site, and I found the program after browsing around for a few minutes.
Thanks a lot, Aaronw.
