I am thinking of building a new desk. My current desk is just a kitchen style table. I am wondering about bad reflections off it. Should desks idealy be at an angle? If so what degree? The only mixing console I need to worry about is a little 16ch spirt rackmount board that I use for extra pre's and headphone monitors (all the other pres are in racks). Should I put that in the middle of the desk by cutting a rack mount space or should I make my desk as small as can be with just enough space for my mouse, control surface, pens and Java. Acousticaly which would be better? I was thinking of 3/4" MDF as material. Also I will need to build a new table for my dual comp monitors and my BM-15s. My guess is seperate pieces would allow the most flexibilty if say I decide to move. Any helpful hint would be grand. I am also debating the proper hieght of the BM15's
As I see it choose the height of the speaker first and then build the desk in a way, you don't get early reflections to your ears. You can easily check that with the mirror trick (if you don't know do a search). It's all over. Put them on stands (or soffit) behind the desk, it's easier to controll ER then. The bridge or 2 computerscreens in the proper hight can do a lot here. Certainly it depends on how you want to build the new desk. If you put your speakers at earlevel you're better of cause you have a flat angle in comparison of puting them higher. Refering to your other thread: If you put the speakers higher than earlevel I would angle them down. ---------- Florian
Thanks for the tip, I have read about the mirror trick Usually I think it is used to suss out wall problems Your saying use it on the desk? I'll give that a shot deffo. Sounds to me then that angling the desk would be the way to go. I cant see the monitors showing up in a mirrow if the desk is say at 30 degree angel or something. In regards to speaker height, do you suggest then the center of woofer at ear level? I do have MoPads so the can angle down a bit. I am thinking of setting the comp monitors back about six inches so they don't effect the imaging much. Any opinions on hollow core material for the computer monitor stand? THink it will resonate? Thanks again.
The mirror trick works whenever you want to raytrace the path of the sound after it hit a surface. No matter if it's a wall or a desk. What you should think about in context of speaker position is the modal behaviour at the listening position. This means that a soundsource excites certain roommodes, which may be bad at the mix spot. If you move the speaker the modal behavour may change for the better at the mix position. I'm not experienced in this, I will have to check it out myself in my new room too. Knightfly as the man to ask. I remember a thread, where he explained how to calculate this on paper with some excel spreadsheet to calculate the modes. You gotta search.

If you want to decouple the whole thing you have to make it heavy (sand, concrete, marble, gold  ). On top of the mass sits the speaker and below the mass some kind of rubber/elastomer.
Fpr the speaker stands, I was thinking about using some HVAC heavy rubber mounts. They are used to decouple heating units. They look like little inch thick black bars of soap. I could place them under thhe top speaker shelf then use the MoPads on top of the shelf itself.
