Hello Fellow Music lovers. I'm about to convert the old shed into a place where I can record my kids' demos without disturbing the neighbours anymore! I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer as I'm a novice designer. The shed is currently 16'x20', but am about to add another 6' to make it a total area of 22''x20'. The roof is 8' but will knock out the asbestos sheeting to make it 11' pitched. The new roof extension will be flat, approx 8' or so, all roof in corrugated iron. The floor is concrete slab, but am hoping to float a tongue and groove pineboard or cyprus pine floor (termites hate it!).
Apologies for not adding a drawing but I don't know how to and am a terrible sketcher (better mandolin player!)
There are currently 2 6'x3'5" windows in (what will be) one of the 22' walls. Another window (same dimensions) in one of the 20' walls.
The opposite 22' wall holds the garage door, which will be removed, boarded up and an entrance door added. The existing 20' wall (containing window) will be demolished and rebuilt over the 6' slab extension. The window will probably be preserved and reinstalled. (lots of daylight is good?)
I imagine a dividing wall approx. halfway, making 2 22'x10' rooms, one the control room, the other the live room with vocal booth.
So (visualise please), enter the new control room door (in the front 22' wall) into the control room. Look right to see the desk, chair, ns10's etc. against the far 20' wall. Look left, to see the couch in front of newly installed window, in the opposite 20' wall, facing the desk. (this will be quite a long sound throw from monitors to couch, about 18' or so).
Walk directly forward about 10' to the double sliding doors.
Enter the live room.
Look straight ahead to see the drums against the facing 22' wall (in between the two windows). Look diagonally right to see the small vocal booth placed across the intersecting two walls.
Look left to see the upright piano against the opposite wall.
For good separation I will have the double bass player miced up and grooving with the others in the control room.
Also, in the control room, I plan on having a small skinny storage room 7'x3'? (for old pa bits, etc.) and will probably locate it parallel with the entrance wall, adjacent to the couch, but maybe mask with drapes etc.
I have looked at the SAE garage plan, but feel it would be better for the 'togetherness vible' to have as many musos in the same area as possible, hence the thought to include a corner vocal booth.
Sitting at my desk, and looking left, I will have a double viewing window to look directly across to the vocal booth.
Apologies again for not including a plan at this stage, but hope you can visualise the above. Any help would be fantastic. Best regards,
Rossco.
