I want to begin building a studio in my basement but need some plan suggestions. It is a small space roughly 15 1/2' x 9 1/2'. In the picture the blue room is going to be the control room cause i can only fit the instruments into the brown room. I can move most of the things around in the blue room just not out. Some of the Studio Techs I,ve talked to mentioned just using high quality reference headphones in the control room. Any help is much appreciated.

John what do you think about using really good reference headphones? Also what kind of acoustical treatments could I do in the live room, I'm really needing to keep the noise level down as much as possible.
Firstly - Headphones really aren't a substitute for a proper listening space. Your roomlayout is a hard one - I'd start with moving your gym gear to the bottom of the room (as per the drawing) and set your gear up facing the top fireing your speakers down the length of the room. Then you'll have to treat the room to lower the verbtime overall. cheers john
Would a vocal booth fit in that cubbyhole? Something like this?
