Hi, I live in california, and i am renting a house with a 2 car garage. I want to construct a free standing studio in the garage for overdubs and some demo work. i was curious if anyone else has been in the situation, and if it is advisable. i have been remotely recording bands and my own band, and i would really like to have a nice room to be able to mix in. i will usually record drums in a nicer room in a local studio, but i can do everything else myself. so, what do you guys think? should i spend the money to build it or not? thanks, steve
Steve - it is possible to build a modular studio - i.e it's made up from prefab sections that are bolted together and can be unbolted and moved. cheers john
i had built a room with walls that bolt together, made of 2x4's , 1/2 drywall, 4inch roxul safe insulation and a steel door. its pretty sturdy. i did the framing on the floor, then stood them up and put the frames together with bolts and "L" brackets, then put drywall on, then insulation, then the door. i will try to post pictures but i can't seem to make it work. i have a loft and i used the overhang for the roof. its 3/4" plywood with metal beams the inside walls are just roxul and muslin fabric for a cover. still trying to seal everything up. but i 'm having a problem with acustics, first off its a 10x10 and about 7'6" tall. i thought it woul be alright but i have a bass dead spot right in the middle of the room. the covered insulation on all the walls helps for mids and highs, but not lows. just need help with the lows. would it be better to make it 2 feet longer(10x12) or turn it into a trapizoid(10 feet at the front and 12 feet at the back) or maybe some bass traps or something. i'm tring to get more room and better acustics. any help would be great. i can only go 12' deep because a bathroom door is in the way. and only 12' wide because of mic booth and other areas. and can't go taller.

Check this guy out. He recently did a mobile room/acoustics for some BIG BOY producers out in CA. http://www.evenfalla.com/
