Hey good people.. hoping for an opinion or two to see if I have missed anything major before I go on figuring the next couple steps like planning wiring and figuring out exactly where am I going to get the money to pay for this insane hobby.
This basement studio is multi purpose:
- Provide an area for the band I am in to practice. We are a five piece group with 4 vocals, two acoustic guitars, two hand drums and a violin. This includes an area for band discussions.
- Provide the ability to do some recording (live or tracking) (onto a Mackie SDR through a Sprit Folio SX)
- Provide a place to mix down (Sonar)
- Provide an echo free semi-isolation booth area
- Re-insulate the basement because it gets too darned cold in the winter
The studio is going to take about 60% or so of the basement. I am somewhat limited by the placement of the stairs and furnace. The measurements go 20 feet across the top, 10' down the left till the stairs begin, and about 21 feet down the right wall (~6' to the start of the control area, and the vocal booth is about 6' on the right. Ceiling are 7-8' depending on what I find under the tacky 70's tile that is on their now. Have not figured wall thickness into the drawing yet, really.
I undertand that I am not going to get a great sound out of the area, but am looking to get as good as I can, with a touch of aesthetics. I live alone and am not worried about disturbing the rest of the house, and the rest of the house will leave me alone (save the furnace, but I can shut that off for a while if need be). Quiet neighborhood, so I am not worried too much about noise from outside either to an extent. The work will be done by myself and the band (yeah for sweat equity)
The stairs will be open on the top and for mhalf the bottom, with some storage type area. The mic stands are not actual stands, but more or less how much room I figure a mic stand and singer might need to do their thing. In any case, this is what I have come up with

I have worked into the plan space for a larger console in the future. Have to deal with ventilation, wiring, audio wiring after I have more or less settled on a design
My big questions are: am I making any serious mistakes? Is that enough room for the microphones (We don't practice with mic's now and I have never brought a measure to a performance so I am just not sure). I could probably make the control booth a couple feet deeper and a couple feet less wide, but want to strike that fine balance between the prqactice space use as well.
Anyways.. any comments would be welcome.. Will not be starting construction till late summer/early fall. Does it look workable?
Phase one - a bit of a plan
