Splayed walls: what angle is best?

This seems like a straightforward question, yet I'm surprised that the experts don't agree on the answer...at least from what I've read so far, and I've been reading and searching for several days. I'm in the design stage of a studio. My plan is to splay the left and right walls of the mixdown area. But the question is: To what degree? I've read that 12 degrees seems to be the right number, but can someone comment on that? Is more better? Does it matter, as long as they are splayed at least 12 degrees? The studio will be more or less a "live-end-dead-end" (LE/DE) space 18.5 ft. long and 14 ft wide at the back. The ceiling will be just under 9 ft. The DE will be the mixing end, the LE will be the rehearsal/recording end. A second question. If the answer to the above question is indeed 12 degrees, then don't I splay each wall 6 degrees? Or 12? [That's rather important to know, don't you think?]
Will you be splaying the front wall as well? Will you be doing 2 mix or 5.1 mixing?

At the moment my plan is to have a flat front wall, about 9 feet from corner to corner, and in those corners I'll soffit-mount my speakers at 30 degree angles to the plane of the front wall. 2 (stereo) mixing only. Not 5.1 sensurround. That stuff scares me.
12 degrees is enough to stop flutter echo, which is why walls are splaywed for contriol rooms. If you do 2 walls spalyed, then 6 degrees each will do. If you are considering controling early reflections, then do ray tracing, although practical experience suggests 12 degrees per wall is enough. Andre

Uh, can you please elaborate on what you mean by 'ray tracing'? Methinks you mean the angle of soundwaves from each speaker and how they reflect on a diagram. ???

What is there to elaborate? It is EXACTLY what you wrote in the second sentence above. :D Andre
Aha!. Thanks. -B
Yes, that helps a lot. Thanks for the link, Steve. My sense of the plan you drew is that the rear 2 walls, in the arrangement of 7 would be better left out, due to the early reflections they would cause. Am I correct? That is what I would have guessed even without tracing the lines.
