Hello all. Total newbie here, but I did purchase the Sketchup software and really enjoy it. I made this rendering of my basement which I intend to use as a combination live/rehearsal room with a separate control room. Here's a link to the Sketchup project file, for those who can view it: http://www.ybrband.com/YBRstudio.skp And here's a jpg image from above. No dimensions shown, but the overall size is about 20'x30', the control room being about 7'x20'. Those are the existing dimensions. I intend to use heavy fabric curtains over the exterior windows, fiberglass insulation in the interior wall, and a variety of 2" thick fiberboard panels on walls, ceiling, and corners as absorbers/bass traps. I'd like to hear any comments regarding these ideas, about minimizing sound reflection, the idea of mounting live PA speakers in the corners as shown, and what materials to use in the interior wall to isolate the control room as much as possible. PS: Sketchup users: I'm having a rough time trying to get a door to actually go "through" a wall. It appears open from one side, but then doesn't even stick through the other side. I tried making my own and using the stock component doors, same thing. Any advice? Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the info here.

Should do side wall resonators in your control room, missing a bass trap in the lower right hand corner of the CR. A lot of parralle surfaces, not sure what the flexibility is in your construction...
Welcome to the forum, basementdude. Nice work on the sketch! 8) I would recommend that you start your own thread, rather than piggyback on this particular "sticky" one... I think you'll get better results and it will keep this thread free of project-specific talk. :)
Does your basement have big windows in the south wall? So is it half dug-in or something? Just curious about sound leakage. Trap placement looks okay, but I don't know if you should hang pa speakers on them in the corners. It's going to require quite a sturdy construction and I don't know how it will influence your acoustics. Why would you need pa speakers in a live room anyway? Make a good headphone system for monitoring, so you can plug in headphones in various sockets in the live room. Much better for a studio.

Awesome program. I just imported my 3D autocad file of the studio (which by the way has mods not in this picture...) and looks very cool.
Hi Aaron, I'm new here and have been scrounging ideas for a few weeks. The way you have carved up your space looks interesting..I was wondering what the outside dims of your walls are? I have a 26'x12.5' space I'm working on. Thank you, Shaun
I have to say I am also intrigued by Sketchup. I need to spend more time with it. I downloaded and viewed the paddy file John and it looks great! How do you make them "page" tabs and put them at the angle you want when you switch? That's cool! I need to go through as many tutorials as I can find and keep learning. I have so many questions about sketchup that need answering. Do you know of any good resources out there? Thanks again! Great drawings everyone else too!
It a great program getting worse and worse as more google people play with it. ;) You can learn it quickly because the people who created it, who are now lying on a beach in the Bahamas, made it easy to understand.
The development of 3 dimensional (3D) display technologies led to the tools such as 3D Studio Max and SketchUp enables the realistic design with their. And these are obtained from the basement and formwork plans in the technical drawings. [UNETHICAL SPAM SIGNATURE REMOVED. UNETHICAL SPAMMER BANNED BY MODERATOR].

Yikes! I just finished composing my epistle, accidently hit escape, and whoosh, my laboriously typed post dissapeared!! Here goes again-now watch that key... Hey guys-been studying the site for months now, along with the other studio sites. Learning a lot, thinking a lot, wishing a lot... I noticed that very few people use 3d images, and from the start of my endeavor, 3d design seemed obvious. I came up with this: [/http://www.artifice.com/free/dw_lite.html] Works great, fairly simple, although a little tricky at first-better ead the instructions/tutorials :? . I'll post my current design for sake of demonstration. Please don't lose any sleep over my "design". It's far from being satisfactory and finalized. Although if someone wants to commment, hey why not, right? I plan to post a thread soon, but I'm still studying so that I won't be a sorce of major frustration to all you acousticians and engineers. 8) I am amazed at the repetition in the "newbie" threads, but I'm honest enough to admit that I'll probably do a little of the same thing too. So, reading... The program is, of course free, the only limitation I've run into yet is a maximum of 100 objects per design allowed. May be a problem, depends on how detail-istic you are. Thanks John, and everyone for making this site informative and helpful, and for helping us all to reach our music making dreams. DAVE The dimensions are 11x15' outside. 2x6 with four layers.
Looks awesome and yeah you should be allowed to add more than 100 objects per design.

Don't look now, but the post you are replying to is twelve years old! :) Also, please read the forum rules for posting (click here). You seem to be missing a couple of things! - Stuart -
