Hello!
Why does John always recommend these kind of trapezoidal (control) rooms? Is it because of the reflections-free listening position or to "tame" the modes and avoid the reflections between parallel walls (echos, etc.)?

Nonrectangular rooms?

Go to the SAE site and read there. Also, check out Auralex's Acoustics 101 on their site. It is self explanetory.
There are advantages to splaying walls. There are disadvanteges too. It is harder to model and predict what the modes are going to be exactly. In eaither case the nodes will not be realized until you place your monitors.
Also, there are some good calculators at www.studiotips.com
