A friend of mine advice me to build a high recording drum, cause sound better than the smaller ones. What about this idea? there's a link where I can see this kind of rooms?
there really is no definitive ideal drum room - Ive successfully recorded drums in small rooms and big rooms. It really depends on what kind of drum sound you want. Size doesn't matter - it's what you do with it that matters......now where have I heard that before ;) cheers john
thanks John. But why a lot of people say that big rooms are the best for recording drums?? room reflexions are the question?? but adding reverb to drums is not the same?? I can't undertand why diferent kind of rooms are better than other ones. Someone could explain me this question??

No, adding reverb is never the same. The acoustic space with it's shorter, quicker reflections bouncing back into the mics will always give the sound away, no matter what you do to it. If you add reverb, it sounds like a drum kit in a small room with reverb on it. Like John said, it is a preference thing. I recently tracked both in a small room and a large choir room. The small room gave me the power, and bigger bottom so much that, I went completely with overheads and a kick mic only. I compressed the mix as a whole and it is pretty mean sounding. When I put the same kit, player, etc in the big room, I got more use out of the direct mics, and was able to compress a bit harder to get a bigger sounding snare. But I lost some power in my floor tom. It is a trade off. I read on Auralex's site that you could go up in height to get the volume that you need for a room, but I disagree. You need longer 2,3 and 4th order reflections in the mics, not faster.
I hope try this some day :( . Perhaps I'll understand better the diference on my ears...
