Found this place through the Home Recording BBS, I'm looking for plans for building a console for my mixer, keyboard, rack gear and computers... and monitors (both puter and studio near fields)...
Anyway, hello everyone! i'm happy to have found a place in cyberspace where so many people like this live!! it's very encouraging!!
To Mr.Sayers, your work is brilliant! I was looking at some of the photos on the site! Very pleasing to the eye as well as functional. Cheers!
My task is to convert a couple rooms in my basement into a decent studio with live room, vocal room and control room. We've just had the basement finished (without a studio in mind as i was overseas during the planning/building). I will try to convert what i can, there is definately potential with the current set up, and well, i'm rather excited about the idea but am looking more forward to start recording in it.
the question i have is about building some sort of desk that will have house my mixer etc. i've no wood working skill (but would happy learn) nor do i have any experience in designing such a thing (load bareing or joints or anything ). I was wondering if there were plans for a desk out there that could be modified a bit? i've been collecting pictures of desks off the web. they look nice and i could stretch things a bit here and there to get what i want but i have no work plan to modify.
what i'm looking for is something modular, flexible in that if i buy a different (bigger) mixer in the future i wouldn't have to throw away what i've already got. something like inserting a leaf or so..
are there any suggestions? where should i start? how does one learn this stuff? maybe someone out there has the plans for a basic console they could give me to start with?
was thinking this would be a great winter project out in the garage, oil heater and power tools.. cozy cozy cozy :).
just FYI the gear i wanna house:
*Mackie 24x8 (future may an additional 24 channels with that extension thing the have)
*(2) computer monitors
*(2+) or more near field monitors
*(1+) ADAT
*(1+) patchbays
*(1) power supply, conditioner
actually it maybe be easier to say something like 15-20 seeable/touchable rack spaces (maybe with opprotunity to build larger and place or something) and some more at the knees (like under the desk or so).
i'll be browsing through the forum for the rest of the afternoon it looks like, i feel like i've hit a gold mine!!! hehe
thanks all in advance,
take care,
