I have some time to develop this project, so I have started planning to get it right. I have another room available in my facility that I would like to turn into a post production room, including 5.1 mixing. The room is small, but I am attempting to devise a plan to make this a really great room. Would anyone like to help? Here is what I have to begin with. The first picture is the current condition of the room. Goals are to: Create a very good mix room / 5.1 room . Need good/not perfect isolation to the floor above. Want to keep the window (curtains are fine). Good

The current ceiling is drywall .. as shown below, it is open into the next room.

This is how a 5:1 would fit in your room. It's tight :) where's the door?? cheers john

Door is shown in lower left. Now what ?..lol
Also, I certainly need to keep the current desk and the seating at the back of the room.
Just for clarification

forgive me - I didn't see the line in tha bottom corner. So you'll have to mount your rears free standing? cheers john
Hi John, I was thinking that I would wall / ceiling mount them, or possibly build in soffits high on the wall... Thanks
You will want to keep the distance the same for your rears as the front. If they are higher, the distance from speaker to listening position will be greater than the front speakers. As John mentioned, you can use stands and just use them as needed.
I hear ya Aaron. .. I was thinking that I could raise them up, but bring them inside the circle and angle them to mix position keeping distance correct. As long as it is not too dramatic, I don't see a huge problem with this idea. Do you ? Stands may be a traffic issue for the room... I will consider this though. .. Also, Any thoughts on this ceiling structure and treatment. What about the potential opening at the back of the room into the next rooms ceiling. Can I "vent" bass here ? I am not really concerned about isolation to that room. .. Thanks, Jeff
Oops.. see below regarding ceiling and treatment.

From everything I've read here, if you have low ceilings, you want it to be absorbant (like 703). Are you soffit mounting the front speakers? Keep in mid, if you're doing 5.1, toy also want the front wall to be absorbtive, so you don't hrsh reflections from the rear speakers. The rear wall...what exactly do you have there, if anything. What's the other room?
Soffits on front wall, room behind is control room A (see diagram upthread). Next room is large. .. On last diagram.. rear wall, I have a design for shallow resonant absorber / diffusor.. probably for entire wall. Also could be used on side wall as shown. .. Regarding absorption on front wall and ceiling. Should I frame this all out and fill with 703, then fabric cover ? .. Thanks again, much appreciated. Jeff
Will you also be doing 2 mix mixes? If so, you want the front wall reflective. So make panels that can be installed/removed. Keep in mind that the speakers will also have to be adjusted so they are not in front or behind the front surface of the wall. There's a diagram somewhere, I'll try and find it and post.
Aaron, Yes I want to be able to do "2-mixes" in there as well. .. Hmm.. I have an idea for removable panel / adjustable front wall panels. What about ceiling angles..? I would certainly prefer one wall. .. In front or behind ? Are you reffering to the speaker being flush with the baffle ? Jeff

Yes. Ceiling angles, from what I've been told is to have the where the listening position is, to A: be the high point, or B: to have it slope up from front to back.
