hi all, It's my first time posting here. My control room is in a 10x10 with a 10' high ceiling. I'm still trying to fix the bass problem where it's much louder as you move further back from the speakers. I have the DynAudio BM15A set at around 1\2 foot from the wall and i'm sitting about 4 feet from it. Will it help if i get smaller reference monitor so i can be closer to it and get mostly direct sound and as little room sound as possible ???? Also, i have an empty and fairly big basement but the ceiling is 6'....would it be better to move my control room to the basement ??? Thanks
10x10x10, a perfect cube. Not an easy way to start but some nice mixes/recordings can be made in almost any room. Those are great speaks..You didn't say if you had any acoustic treatment up on the walls or ceiling. What's the floor material? I've had really good results with Realtraps by Ethan Winer...and not as good results with foam stuff(except for some flutter echo treatment and first reflection points on the walls. The Realtraps are expensive but work way better than foam. There are hours of posts on this site to read and on realtraps.com You can make traps as well.

Greetings Mini-Traps do NOT work better than proper acoustic foam for standing wave absorption. Mini-Traps work better than cheap rip of foam as sold by Ebay and Foam by Mail. However IMO there are beter solutions than Mni-Traps. Good foam for one, as made by Aurlex and other REPUTABLE Folks. This is a comparitive absorption data graph from test results done in acoustic labs. Bear in mind standing wave trapping is not just a bass thing. It's also need in the lo-mids. The Auralex foam came out the best, followed VERY closely by DIY rockwool/glasswool corner wedge absorbers. The lowest red line ( 16) is the cheap rip off foam. No wonder people think foam is crap :( ;) If your DIY skills are fair to moderate, I would recommend this, as it's one helluva lot cheaper than the foam. Personally I would NOT recommend the Mini-Traps. hth :) Paul
Interesting Paul. It's definitely contrary to what I've researched about foam. Of course everyone's charts skew towards what they market. I've owned lenrds before, 12"x24" wedges of foam stuck in the corner, so I take it you meant mounting across wall intersections and floor to ceiling junctions for slab-type hard panels. The lenrds seemed to do more for the low mids on up in my experience.

greetings Motown59 :) The data above is not skewed. It's source as shown on the graph is from BOTH Realtraps AND Auralex/StudioTips, so it's unlikely the data has been skewed to make something look worse. ;) The data above compares like for like, and a MegaLENRD, the rockwool slabs and a Mini-Trap take up almost the same effective space when placed in a corner. A megaLENRD protrudes only 1.5" into the room further than a Mini-Trap. See this link for a comparitive plan view... http://forum.studiotips.com/viewtopic.php?t=536 A standard LENRD is much smaller than any of the devices in those tests, and that's why they weren't included inthe tests I guess. Becuase of that I wouldn't argue that a standard LENRD performs worse than either a Mini-Trap and a Mega LENRD or the DIY rockwool designs. but you compare devices in lab tests, you have to make sure they are of the same or very similar size, otherwise the tests are meaningless. I hope that clarifies things a bit :) Paul
Yea, I hear you. First, I didn't know there was such a thing as a mega-lenrd...guess I need to go take a look. From southern California, have a good one... kel
i had a lot of questions about megaLENRDs, and the chart that is supposed to be up here does not show up on my pc. anyway, here is something that i posted on another forum, which i have yet to get any feedback from... "i was talking to someone a while back who claims that mega LENRDs are the most effective type of bass traps available, and that they absorb frequencies below 50hz. now do not get these confused with the regular LENRDs, for they are half the size (actually 75% smaller) and take up much less space than the megas... here is my question: which are more effective for a corner solution: 4" fiberglass or megaLENRDs? i can't really seem to find how well some home made fiberglass panels would rate in terms of frequency absorbtion."
