Greetings all!
Well, the closing date on the new house is Dec 3, and I'll have approx twice as much basement to build in (and permission from the wife to do so, probably the more important part!) so naturally I've got the whole thing laid out in my mind... all I've gotta do is field-measure the basement and find out precisely how big everything will be. ;)
I'm still juggling ideas for wall treatment in the tracking room. I want something adjustable, so I can go from live to dead (and wherever inbetween) easily. I tried John's door-panel idea (from Left Bank studios) but it seems they require more carpentry skill than I have to make them look nice... the ones I built are effective, but look pretty cheezy. Right now, the front-runner idea is to build slats out of 2x4s that have a long, gentle curve in them and mount them on the walls with 1/2" space between them. This would let low-mids and lows thru into the insulation behind them, and reflect mids and highs without creating flutter echoes. I don't count on them too much for diffusion- the room won't be quite big enough for that anyway. I'd also put in a ledger block around the whole room, and I could hang 1" or 2" thick panels of rigid fiberglass wrapped in fabric- perhaps framed with wood, perhaps not- and add/subtract absorption as the session required. I thought about just using regular 1x4 or 1x6 slats (or a combination) but there would be flutter echoes from parallel walls. Angling these walls would lose more floor area than I'm willing to part with, especially since wall treatment could solve the problem anyway.
I'm too much of a cheapskate to call up RPG or I'd have done it by now. I like my curved-slats idea, but from what Knightfly said in another post, chances are it'll only reflect down to about 1000 Hz or so. I'll have low-freq absorption in the corners, and there'll be 3-1/2" of fiberglass behind these slats, so I'm not sure if this will be a problem or not. Anyone got other ideas for wall treatment that is as easy to build as this, with a greater diffusion range?
Thanks in advance!

Hi dymax,
Just on the diffusion part.I don't think the size of a LIVE room puts any limitations on the use of diffusion as long as it sounds good. Why do you think it's not big enough for diffusion? You said you want to implement more of it into your room, so why not try and experiment :)
How big is the room anyway? I guess some sort of diffusing elements are fairly easy to build so why not make a few and experiment and listen :)
just a thought anyway

Is your main goal of the long gentle curve aesthetics? Seems like it would be harder to control the flutter echo overall.
Seems to me the best/easiest way to accomplish the flexibility is to build the wall with what best suits the majority of your needs, and then build a gobo for the rest. i.e.: slats on the walls and a "dead" gobo or dead walls and reflective gobo.
