This may be a little different for you guys, but here it is:
I have a detached, cinder block garage which is 24'6" square, with the perimeter walls being 7'6" high, and the roof peaking at 14'. I do almost all my work in the control room, so I'd like some help with a layout that accomplishes the following:
1. Incorporates a fairly small iso (maybe 6' x 8') area for recording. Big enough for vocals, a guitar amp, an acoustic guitarist. Anything that needs more space, I will cut in the control room with headphones or do somewhere else.
2. A small machine room adjacent to the control room, where I can put my CPU, drives, etc. where they will be quiet yet accessable.
3. The LARGEST control room possible taking 1 and 2 into account. I'd really like a comfortable, living room type of vibe where I can do composing and mixing (probably 80% of my work).
My thought was to somehow make the iso booth and the machine room work as mirror image spaces on either side of the control room, allowing for non splayed walls, etc. I've searched this site and the SAE site, and haven't seen a design for what is basically a one room facility of this size. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

John -
That's really great! I wouldn't have thought of locating the control room asymmetrically. That really allows for both the largest control room and a very nice sized booth. Your design leaves me with three questions:
1. Is there a reason I can't flip the design horizontally, having the outer door open up into what you labeled as storage, giving me a little entrance vestibule for a temperature lock and for coats, etc. in the winter?
2. The 14' roof peak runs down the center of the space (top to bottom of the drawing), which would be several feet off center in the control room. How do I deal with making the ceiling even? Originally, I had hoped to leave as much of a vaulted ceiling as possible, maybe even with skylights. This isn't a deal breaker for me, but I'm assuming that ceiling symmetry is essential.
3. Is it ok to use the soffit area for storage from an acoustical standpoint? Also, is there any problem with mounting a large television monitor in the soffit wall between the speakers? Is there any negative impact? Also, if I decide to go with nearfields only, does the shape of the front wall stay the same?
Thanks for the help. This is a great resource for so many people. I hope you keep it going for a long time to come.

One more tiny thing..... How do I get into the PC room? A door where the glass in indicated in the plan?
You mean like this??

Thanks so muchfor the revision. One thing I really like about your original is that I would still have the natural light from the windows. I've done a revision of that plan which incorporates that aspect. Does it matter that the peak of the roof will not be centered over the control room? I'd like to keep the vaulted ceilings if possible, maybe with a skylight or two in the CR. Thanks again for all the help.
Cool - that's a good solution - I agree about the natural light.
You can drop a false ceiling cloud under your vaulted ceiling maybe?
