First off, gotta thank John and his "crew" this awesome site! As I've read suggested to many others, I've been reading, reading, reading!!! So here's the story - A friend of mine recently bought a house with that has a metal prefab type building in the back, which he wants to convert to a studio. The building is 24' 2" on the "door" side and 21"4" on the garage roll-up door side. Yup – I said garage roll-up door! I've advised him of the trade-offs with keeping the roll-up door (exterior noise, etc.) and he isn’t concerned as he is some distance from his neighbors and wants to keep the room somewhat “multi-purpose”. The interior of the building has been dry walled (ceiling too), with the exception of the back wall. Here area some Exterior photos: Interior photos: I initially posted a design on the PreFab Building Thread, and after reading through the site so far – I’ve amended my initial design (3D Home Architect isn’t so bad, once ya learn how to use it) and would really like some feedback. Here’s my amended design: This is what it looks like: Since the large rollup door would most likely make the effort to isolate sound in the Main Room difficult I also thought maybe I’d also focus on the Control and Vocal rooms instead, and separate them from the Main Room with the additional wall that bisects the building. I’d use some other method to reduce/isolate sound in the Main Room… (CR on the drywall?). At any rate here’s a drawing sans walled off Main room… Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Back to reading. And THANKS again fellas.
i think some work on the symetry of the CR has to be done... look at other plans on the forum...
those poles are a bit strange. It appears they hold up the lean-to extension but are total overkill. A single 4"x 4" in the center with associated 6" x 2" beams would do the same thing. cheers john
Ponkass - Thanks for the reply! If it were my room, I'd definitely make the CR a bit more like Johns designs - I'll pass your comment along. Thanks again. John - Thanks for the reply! I really dig this site. The poles are actually steel rear wall supports for the building. The center one actually ends at the peak of the roof and supports the lateral roof beams. Unfortunately I don't beleive they can be moved without altering the rear supporting structure. I realize the design isn't "optimal", but the owner is willng to accept the trade-offs associated with keeping the roll up door, and not drastically restructuring the room. Maybe the better question from me is the following: If the information I've provided is sufficient, and given the owners wish to not use the room solely for recording - is this a really worth the effort? Thanks again! Steverino
Hi all, I've modified the layout a bit... made the CR more realistic... I'm wondering about the 2 sliding doors facing each other LR to CR and DR to LR. Should I redesign to at least angle the door in the Dead Room? her's the revised layout:
Control Room is much better :) And Yes you should design in an angled wall in the Dead Room. Not to mention your lack of angles in the Live Room
