All,
This is my first post to this forum, but I am here a lot.... Usually hanging out on the DUC, but need some other advice. E-mailed Ethan too, but figured more input would not hurt....
I currently run a small Pro Tools studio in Northen Virginia and am in the process of making a better space for myself. The problen is that I live in a townhouse that I own, but cannot really change cosmetically due to possibly selling it ina year or so. Probably 2, but still.... Right now my control room is in a 12 x 12 room, with some treatment and it seems to work. My live room is a 14 x 22 space that will soon be CLUTTER FREE from the wifes stuff. Works great for bouncing the sound though! :-) What I am trying to do is bring the CR out to the large room, and put my drums into the smaller room. It will be treated as well. I also have a small 3.5 x 8 foot vocal booth that I also track guitars in. Amps only! So the idea is to have the console and racks out in the larger room, a small couch in the middle and then a place to sit the musicians comfortably out behind that. Use wall baffles if need be later.
Now, on my site www.tbrstudio.com I have a link called NEW STUDIO CONCEPT DESIGN on the top left. I created a few 3d models of what I had in mind. If anyone can please take a look at it. I basically took realtraps idea and applied it to the room, but am curious of slot panels behind the speakers or on the side or back walls would be a good thing to do as well? Behind the curtains will be a sliding glass door that is not modelled, but it is there now! :-)
Oh ya! Another thing! The desk is larger than it will be. Modelled this at 4am on day. Basically want a small desktop with the 2 side cars and a chair. 2 seater couch behind that and then the small area for the musicians.
Thanks for any help in advance! glad to be here finally!

NEW STUDIO DESIGN - PICS FINALLY - THANKS FOR THE HELP

Nice design idea. I'd do the side walls john portable slat resonator style instead of the realtraps (absorption front) style.
The corners, and the ceiling ... I like, I wouldnt change from yur design.
The space behind the mix desk, yes keep absorbed as well, especially behind the monitors.
The rear of your room is cool. The diffusor on your ceiling, I'd get rid off unless you have a very TALL 10' or more ceiling. If not, keep it absorbed like the front of your room..

giles,
Thanks! That is something to take into consideration for sure. I am limited on height. A little over 7'6". Could raise it, but that is more cost and what I am trying to avoid.
I will talk to john about the portable slots too. He and I have spoke in the past some.
Thanks!
Hopefully this will come to revelations soon!

Portable slots are easy to build.
If you have not seen the design i will link you...
A Buddy in Chi-town has built them for his control room and is having good success. :)

Niles,
thanks! I think that I have seen those from an email from my buddy Carl at Station X Studio up in Rochester. Now, with that picture, would those take the place of the ones that are angled and start roughly in the same place? Keep the ones above it though on the ceiling right?
Basically build the slots instead on the traps to the right and left? right...
How high is it built usually?

These take the place of the ones flat against the walls in your 3d model. Height is spec'd to go from floor to ceiling.
Giles,
I posted another one before I saw your reply. Go back and look at what I quickly did with a slot idea. It is the last on the bottom.. You are saying to get rid of the angled one on the ceiling then and make it go all the way up. I will model that quickly and add it too witha few views.
ADDED ANOTHER ONE! Mind you the wood color is hainus! Looking for a better texture now!
Thanks again, this is shaping up...

Keep your corner units however. :)
keep in mind the slats do not have to start until just forward of your mix position. (Just at the front of your monitors, so you can keep your corner bass traps in place.)
All,
Well it is pretty much done. I still need to build 3 more Bass Traps. Put one more in the Right corner obviously, and two out in the hall for both looks and some help.
I realy love it and the sound improved dramatically. I cn hear stuff that I did not hear initialy. wanted to tahnk you all for the advice and tips. The rom doubles as a live room, however the amps are in a amp closet (no pics yet of that) and the drums are in the next room as well. The environment is pretty cozy and the cat even likes it. Wife too, so that is a bonus. Anyways, thanks again for the help! Time to make music!
