I am basically asking what are the things to consider in designing a RECORDING STUDIO. it's my thesis, and i really need some help.
My thesis is about music and entertainment district. and basically i have a problem about acoustics and other things that i may not have consider.
I would love to learn about:
1. How do you treat acoustics on a recording studios (step by step, and if it has a formula)
2. What to use for acoustic treatment.
3. How big is it? for example you are doing this for a major label
4. Limitations, in accordance with product and other things i didn't specify.
5. Anything I forgot to mention
6. Also how many people and space i have to provide it with the latest innovative technology needed for a recording studio.
PLEASE I would really appreciate your help. thanking you in advance, TROLL.

You are writing a thesis, and just now inquiring about the subject? Wha the? :? Isn't it a bit late. Forgive my shock, but some people here have been studying for 20 yrs and still are learning, and you want to write a thesis based on replys on a net forum  I'd say you have a few YEARS of study before you write a thesis. But thats my .02, however, I'd be pissed if I found out I built a studio based on your limited knowledge , and you pulled it off because of a credential based on a forum full of replys. :x Boy has this world changed. I always thought credentials were based on long term study. fitZ :?it's my thesis,
LOL. Well Fitz you summed it up.
I Bypassed this thread earlier as another poppy cock guy like the guy over on Homerecording/bbs giving out all this advice that no one could verify. LOL
I mean if this kid is doing a thesis I;d think he'd take the time to read the forum, visit the SAE site, etc... Do some Study. but the youngins nowadays dont wanna work. Oh well.
first of all, this is but a part of my methodology. this is what i call "forum base of gathering analytical suggestions" from people who has ideas about my thesis. this is but a part of my thesis.
don't expect a student to have all the knowledge he had by reading books, sometimes he needs to share with the knowledge of other people to learn, and basically im doing just that.
Don't expect an architectural student to know much about acoustic, in my case, i'm trying to study hard on that subject, since music is the only thing i know in life, and basically i had to submit a thesis that is somehow related to what i like.
I think highly of you, as persons who practice acoustic treatment, (i dunno how long) but i consider you to be much more knowledgeable than me. If you have anything to share, then please help me by sharing it. wouldn't it be good deep inside your heart, that you have helped a fellow person who seeks knowledge from persons whom he knows could help him. It might be a little help from you, but for me, you had help me in the biggest way.
I THANK YOU...
hi psycotroll,
I'm not one of the pros on this board, and started out studying on the subject half a year ago. but i try to give you a start. :)
..... i get the impression, that you really have no clue about the basics at all, so i strongly recommend, as bryan already said, that you do some reading first. do a search in the forum and use the vast knowledge already available. i also give you the advise to read "Master Handbook of Acoustics" by Alton Everest. it's a great book which covers almost everything you'll need in the beginning. it also provides you with formulas. here are some links i stumbled across reading posts here or googling: http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/ http://www.customaudio.freeserve.co.uk/techfrmset.htm http://www.acoustics101.com http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html http://www.cardas.com/cgi-bin/main_cont ... Room+Setup http://www.campanellaacoustics.com/faq.htm http://ceae.colorado.edu/~muehleis/clas ... waves.html http://www.acousticalsolutions.com/education/index.asp http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/acou ... izing3.htm http://forum.studiotips.com/ another great forum. they did measurements on corner absorbers recently. great info! i think that gets you on track and keeps you busy for a while! so when you digested the basics and come back and ask the more advanced who stick around here, i'm sure they are happy to help out! if you also need more info on soundproofing, have a look in the construction forum (sticky: reference section). cheers dreamerHow do you treat acoustics on a recording studios (step by step, and if it has a formula)
Thanks Dreamer that was my point albeit on the sly by mentioning a few places to go and telling him in a nut shell to RESEARCH then ask.
Heck I aint a pro, but I sure do read this forum everyday. When I have a point of disagreement i open my mouth to have the experts shut it. LOL
To sum up what Mr. Giles suggests, have you bothered to read ANYTHING here first? All I can tell you is this. The subject of Studio Design is vast, let alone acoustics which is a science. And no one will hand you a summary of these subjects in a forum post. Learning is one thing, but from my experience, it takes work on YOUR part to research the subject at hand. Furthermore, exactly what is it you are trying to include in your thesis, as Music and Entertainment is a broad spectrum of subjects? As related to architecture, acoustics is a subject that the SCHOOL should be teaching you, since you are an architecture student. As a subject included in a Music and Entertainment Thesis for an architecture degree, it would be ludicrous to delve into the scientific depths of acoustics in a thesis, especially since you have no training in it in the first place. Its obvious you are not asking for help with a design, so exactly what are you trying to cover in this part of your thesis? If we knew that, then maybe we could point you in the right direction. BTW, it has been suggested by other professionals that Mr Everests handbook is grossly out of date. But don't take my word on that, as I am not an acoustician. However, if you are looking for current studio design dogma, there are currently four schools of thought. Read the current threads in all the forums here and you may begin to understand why NO ONE can fullfill your request as asked, and you may accidently find the information you seek. fitZsometimes he needs to share with the knowledge of other people to learn, and basically im doing just that.
You guys would be suprised how many architects- REGISTERED architects- don't have a clue about acoustics. They didn't give us any training on acoustics at all when I was in school- before I found this site and recording.org, all i knew about sound control I learned from designing animal hospitals (those dogs get LOUD when they wake up from surgical anaesthetic...)
We dont mean to be jerks around here, psychotroll. We really don't. The trouble is we get a lot of people who just log on, post a question that we've answered a thousand times, and then don't bother reading thru the rest of the forum. There's not too many general design questions that haven't been answered on here before. It's a hazard of running a message board such as this.
The basics of construction techniques are in the sticky threads of the Studio Construction part of this forum. Read them all if you haven't. The Studio Design part is mostly overall layouts. These two sections will probably answer 90% of your questions.
As far as the size of a studio, it depends on a lot of stuff. If the studio only has one engineer (which will be 90% of what is done on this forum- it's mostly guys building their own studio) then there's little point in having more than one control room, and a single control room will probably only service one or two tracking rooms and a couple isolation booths. Much more than that, and you're talking about having another control room group. Which is fine if you're talking about a larger studio company that employs multiple engineers. Before you go too far with your thesis project, you'll need to nail down the particulars about the theoretical company you'd be designing this for.
Hope this helps a little bit...
