G'day, I have had a dream of building a studio and now find myself in a position to realise it.I am so happy to have found this site(although after i grabbed about 200mts square of what I now know is useless carpet) Any way I have listened carefully to what you have all had to say over the last few weeks and have come upwith a design for my space. the outside walls except for on the left hand side are red brick about a foot thick with meshed windows for the top three feet . The left side wall backs on to a largish kitchen and a passage way which leads to a church :)( I will ask some questions here later on the acoustics forum) whaddayareckon? do I have too many rooms here on this design ? Is the liveroom and drum big enough?(ihope you can read the dimensions on the drawing) Are my angles ok? Please if there any questions you need to ask me go ahead. This is a great forum John, and after hearing your works over the years I realise that you are a great sage!!! Thanks. andy d

Here's the pic. - you can get the pic by using "export" in smartdraw BTW. Interesting design - I find the entrance/drum booth area needs resolving better - I'll work on it :) cheers john

My first impression was similar. Needing to go through the drum room to get to the big practice room will annoy the drummers no end. edit.... Noticed that the title of the drawing file was churchmusic, so I am guessing that you are being asked to design a studio for a church campus. That caused me some more concerns. My experience is that once folks realize that there is such a nice sounding room on the church grounds there will be lots of requests to use it to practice...from folks who you do not want anywhere near the expensive gear in the control room. and mic closet. So I monkeyed around with it (attached diagram is very rough) so that every room has an independent entrance through the foyer. anybody can use any of the rooms for practicing while you keep the studio, and the expensive gear in the closet, secure.

Wow,I did not expect such a quick response! sorry mine is so slow !! Innovations,Can I call you Inno! thankyou for the input, yeah i saw the problems when you mentioned them,However the church has no church folk anymore ,It came with the room I want to put the studio in!!!! :D I would love to be able to incorporate the church actually as a Live room(very live). It will be used as a theatre/gallery/yoga/..... anyway I like it thankyou John you have made the complicated simple and cut down the materials by at least a third which is fantastic but the entry way (size wise)still bugs me !!!i didn't realise how much of a problem it will be ,it is still a handy door to get equipment thru. :? I will go and try them both as in mark them out and see them in the flesh,Ive got a feeling something in between the two at this stage might be the way to go.but then again maybe something completely different Had any more thoughts? Thankyou very very much,I am learning so much from everybody here and feel very privileged to be able to do so. I will stop crawling now andy
Perhaps something like this?

Ah - so you can move the doors around?? where is your main entrance door? cheers john
Also another thought...do you expect to still be able to get that piano out ever again?
hey, John the doors cannot be moved. :( The main entrance can be either although I would foresee only using the large door for moving in equipment or opening up for fresh air and light every now and then. The side door backs on to a passge way which has a kitchen (to the right)small office (directly across)and the church ( to the left) running off it Inno ,I dont have a grand piano just an upright but it looked better! How ever if I can use the big doors assuming they are wide enough, to get a nicer piano in ,then that would be great. thanks for the design Dirk (need to keep the doors though ) ta andy d
If you can't move the doors you'll have to go with something like this. cheers john

:D Thankyou John ,That is excellent. sorry to not get back sooner(issues! ) The left of the control room has the small passage with very thick walls so I will leave the existing door in which is 700 mm and another on the control room side. The passage way can also dble as another booth. I like the way the two big rooms are and can see with a wider door being able to have the option of opening it into one big room! Do you think that will bring up acoustic problems? Thanks again John, this design looks like it will get the nod. I really appreciate the time John and everyone who gave me some things to think about. I will get into it!hope fully next questions will be in the construction forum. andy d
