hi, would you have anything to say about this design? is there anything completely wrong? the inner leaf is an inside out wall like at left bank. do you think space is used properly - i hope it´s not going to be too crowded in there! ;) any thoughts - john, aynone? thanks for your comments! fretless p.s.: the live room will be to the right and built sometimes next year at the earliest ...

I thought we all gave you a go ahead on this design... The only thing I dont really understand is, are your angled walls the inner leaf? If so, not good idea as you lose the use of all that space behind the angled walls for bass trapping, etc... The inner leaf should run parallel to your existing Brick wall. Using perhaps the Inside out wall design you see at Left Bank, etc.... ...And let your angled walls be your treatment/Resonators, etc... walls. Hope that helps. Addendum 11' is narrow but you make up for it with your depth of almost 20' My spot is 11x 13 Man I could use that extra 6' I could stuff another 4-5 bodies in here have my sofa in, etc... :)

i will change my concept in this direction! ... seems that wanting to be sure was a good thing anyhow! ;)

watcha doin´ with all that bodies in your control room?!? ;) fretless
Hey, I'm married, no orgies. It would confuse the wife. LOL Anyway, seriously though..... Re work it and let us all check it out :)
This is what everyone is refering to as far as the walls are concerned. cheers JOhn

thank you, john! one (hopefully last) question: you "built" the inner leaf around the projection on the upper wall to win a bit of room width. since the difference here are about 16 cm, do you think this has much effect? would you mean it to be necessary? for construction it would be easier to go straight ahead and lose this little bit of width! am i right that if the outcome isn´t 100% symmetric this wouldn´t matter that much since the monitoring position is a little away!? :? fretless

Yes - I was trying to give your absorbers/slots some depth. cheers john

What program for drawing did you use???
Hello and excuse me for asking a question on this thread. John, could you explain exactly what the "bass traps" are? Membrane or panel absorbers? I've heard the term used in so many references but rarely does anyone describe exactly what they are. If panel absorbers, what sort of panel, and do they run floor to ceiling? And what is on the inside? Thanks. fitZ
fitZ - I've always considered a membrane/panel absorber to be just that - a method of absorbing low frequencies. Usually you see them used on walls where you want to absorb bass but not highs. They can be angular or curved to add diffusion as well as breaking up parallel walls. Whereas a bass trap is an area where you attempt to trap the bass, like in the cavities/corners using the depth off a wall like I've suggested be created at the rear of the room in this thread. Simply by lifting the 703 off the wall you lower the absorption frequency - it's recently been discussed in the acoustics forum and Eric kindly answered all that area. Hangers could also be used in the corner cavities. The depth off the wall could also be used for slot resonator in the rear corner if you want to keep the high end up and the reflections won't get back to the sweet spot, but a slot resonator is not a bass trap as they don't go that low efficiently. cheers john

Hey thanks John....didn't know if you'd speak to me anymore :D Ok,let me see..... bass trap is a resistance absorber that uses 703 in deep areas where the highs will be trapped as well, where as a panel absorber, still traps bass, but may reflect mids and highs. Is that correct? If it is, then now I understand...yea, I think I get it now. Hey, in regards to that thread.... holy moly....an acoustical shoot out at the OK Corral...wow! I know Steve wants civility here, but I kind of like the idea of different trains of thought being able to butt heads...how else will we hear the nitty gritty of this stuff. If we only have ONE so called expert telling us thier view or interpretation, or opinion, even if backed by tests, then thats a pretty one sided affair. But who am I. Besides, I swore off acoustics 3 months ago....only had one or two bouts of withdrawall symptoms...ha! Yesterday was another. Well thanks again John. I'll get it sooner or later. fitZ
Fitz, I don't want an oligarchy here, but I see no reason why two grown men can't have a discussion without name calling - just proves that you can get old without getting mature. As far as I'm concerned, people who want to act stupid should be on the Jerry Springer Show, not on a board that's trying to help people understand more about building their studios. Nuff said, this shit gives me a headache, and headaches piss me off, and being pissed off affects what little sleep I get, which pisses me off even more. Not sure why I even dignified that bullshit with any response whatever... Steve
