I'm moving into a new place and will be using a smallish dining room as a mixing room. Measurements: 3.73m long, 3.56m wide, and 2.5m high, with a bay window wall at the front of the room. Floors are hardwood, walls are plaster (I think). A floorplan image is attached, with measurements shown in feet and inches. The room's not ideal, but it's not hopeless (it'll probably be the least hopeless home studio I've ever had!). So applying what I've learned from lurking here and elsewhere, I'm thinking the following:
1) My desk will be in the bay window, facing East.
2) Two floor-to-ceiling superchunks shall be erected in the rear corners of the West wall, and that door on the west wall shall be reversed so I don't put a doorknob through one of traps, which would certainly happen almost immediately.
3) I currently have ten 4'x2'x4" absorbers made of Roxul framed with drywall corner bead and wrapped in fabric. A bunch of these will be going on the back wall (West). Placement will be determined by room analysis and trial-and-error. I'll have to wait until I have everything in place to figure out where to treat the side walls, but I'll definitely have material left over from the superchunks for more panels.
4) I haven't figured out the ceiling yet, but I'll be hanging a cloud of some sort. Placement will again be determined by room analysis and trial-and-error.
So far, so good? If anything jumps out as a bad idea, let me know.
Now! For my questions:
1) That's a glass-paned french door on the south wall. I kinda want to keep it, as it really ties the adjacent living room together. I'll have some absorbers on stands that I can move in front of it when working, but in the interest of symmetry, what should I do on the opposite wall? Hang a mirror to complement the reflective surface of the french door? Drapes maybe?
2) I'm not really sure what to do with the bay window as far as treatment goes. There's not a lot of room between the windows. I'll definitely be hanging drapes, but is there anything else I should consider?
3) I have four hefty bags full of Auralex squares from my last studio; any tips on how and if I could incorporate some of these? Aside from putting these hefty bags on the curb, wise guy. :P
This room does not have to function as a dining room (an entire room dedicated to eating food? How ostentatious!) but I hope to be able to sell the place some day with an intact dining room, so I don't want to do anything too crazy construction-wise (or at least anything that isn't easily reversible). My budget's healthy if I need to invest in any further treatment; it's supposed to be spent on furniture, but pfffft, I know what's important here.
Thanks!
