Hi everyone
New guy from South Africa :)
Here's to hoping this thread will be a success story.
Question summary at the end of the post :)
We're planning on building a studio in a 11x15 meter space. (36'x49')
We'll be fine tuning our plans over the next few months and will probably be up and running in Jan 2015 :D
It will be on the second floor of a building with a wooden floor because a concrete floor is WAY too expensive.
This isn't a pro commercial facility... yet... This is a semi-pro facility that with time we'd like to get to a pro level and rent out so everything we do, we're trying to do in such a way that we can expand, upgrade and improve.
The flooring on the top side will probably be plywood or something else if someone has a better suggestion and then mineral wool inside and a drywall ceiling on the 1st floor.
We won't bother anyone on the first floor cause it's the studio owner living on the first floor who will anyways always be involved in the studio. :)
The outside foundational walls are double brick walls 230mm thick and there won't be a cement plastering finish on the inside because we will be building all inside rooms with drywall separated from the outside wall with a double wood stud configuration with mineral wool 50kg per cubic meter density or higher.
The space between room and the outside wall are 367mm. Our wood studs are 114x38mm here and not exactly 2x4" and then it's one layer drywall on each side (for now -got a question later about this), and then 114mm gap between the wood studs. Just because it'll be easier to space them by placing a small stud piece between the studs. Obviously not leaving it there. :)
The inside rooms can be however we need them which where we need some help/ideas BUT going from the most popular room ratios such as 1:1,6:2,33, 1:1,51:2,2 and few others we just can't figure out a a nice layout to utilize as much of the space as possible. The focus is obviously quality first, trying to get a great sounding live room & control room first and there will obviously be a lot of space left so in our rough idea we put in an extra room that we can deaden if we want to record drums without ambience, guitar amps, etc. There's also a nice little lounge area and a small storage room.
Reason why we are getting stuck in the design is because the only limitation is roof height, which actually brings me to the question we're wondering about most.
1. The bottom of the roof trusses will leave the ceiling height at 2525mm :(
Bare with me please as english isn't my first language and it's a little difficult to explain  :)
Is it ill advised to not put drywall or some material as a ceiling below the roof trusses or can you leave it open, put some kind of finishing/varnish on the wood of the trusses and effectively have a higher roof?
These trusses will go up 4957mm
I've attached a picture of the building plans for the roof.
If it could be done and it would benefit the acoustics, we'll put the isolation right before the outside roof tiles. We'll make a plan to do all the same kind of isolation there.
If you guys say it would be better based on our current rough plan and dimensions, to do a normal drywall roof with all the insulation and stuff going in between the trusses, we'll do that.
We just don't have any clue how and open roof affects the acoustics.
2525mm just doesn't seem high enough for the best drum overheads sound as the early reflections will bother, right?
2. Here's the floorplan
We used some ratios based on this website's calculator
http://www.acoustic.ua/forms/rr.en.html
Originally found these ratios on the University of Salford site
The calculator just worked well. :)
Yes, the control room doesn't have a rectangular shape. We just look up some big studios' floor plans and tried to scale that shape we saw in many of them.
2a. We wanted to put the angled pieces in the control room in the design and ask for opinions on this control room shape, dimension, etc? Maybe making the angled parts slot resonators?
2b. Are these good volumes, ratios and shapes IF the roof is left only 2525 high?
2c. If it would improve the room sound quality by leaving the ceiling open, should we do it only in specific rooms?
2d. Would it be a good idea to angle two walls in the live room, with about 2.5 degrees to not have them parallel?
Construction will most probably start later this year, maybe Nov/Dec.
This first floor will start soon as the plans have been cleared and everything.
Budget is difficult to really pin point at the moment.
We will probably do it in phases of control room and live room first, and then add the storage room and isolation room later.
Other than that there aren't MAJOR budget constraints, the more money we can save the better, but we will spend what is necessary to get nice sound and upgrade as need. We'll upgrade and expand in phases as in adding more layers drywall/plywood/MDF, etc. adding more acoustic treatment as needed.
We just want to get the essentials up and running to get back into business.
Talking about building in phases
3. Will it work to only install a single layer drywall at first and then add more layers like plywood over the drywall as we progress and are able to afford to install more layers?
Do those few added millimetres change the room response drastically or not enough that we need to be worried about it?
I'm just wondering how the conduits for the cables and power outlets will extend to surface of new layers.
Let the research continue
4. Does anyone have any pointers about how to run cables throughout such a facility that allows for easy-ish expansion?
EDIT: Found the answer  :)
Hope I included all the necessary info. It's 5am now and my brain switched off a long time ago.
Thanks in advance for all help, advice and guidance.
Cheers :D

Advice needed for 11x15m (36'x49') studio

Did some research about the cable question
Hate it when you ask a question about something that actually has such a simple answer  :)
I did some googling and some say it would be good to leave the ceiling below the roof trusses and just apply the isolation just before the last beams.
More volume for the room
So then the roof is going up another 4957mm
I made this new design idea. The middle of the live room and control room will then be aligned with the middle of the roof.
The lighting can also then be attached to the trusses' beams.
Not sure how bad the beams are that's running parallel to the floor? It's only 38mm thick but the question is, would it be better to make some kind of diffusor out of the beams or rather put absorptive material on them?
The iso booths aren't very big 2585x2812. Would they actually be useful for vocal and instrument amps or is there something better a person can/should do with the space?
Latest redesign.
Wanted to get the isolation booth out of the live room to make it a big open live room and as flexible as possible if we someday want to rent out the studio and people are looking for a big room cause there are so very few studios in South Africa with big rooms so we think it'll be a nice advantage for us.
