Greetings repsective studio gurus- Let me first state my admiriation and gratitiude to all of the very generous souls on this site who give their professional expertise to young engineers like myself. Your help and guidance has enlightened myself and many others and most likely as well contributed to some great recordings- thanks so much for your time. My name is Nick and I am a young engineer who is fortunate to be building an analog studio in a rural house. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Olive Grove Studios... http://www.penamusic.com/nickssecretroom/ I used my bands website to post photos of the drum room and where we are at with the construction. I apologize for the organization of the photos but as you will see the architectural diagram I will post later in this message is primative at best. Here are the rough demensions of the room: ____________________15’6"________ [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] 14’ 6" 21’ [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] ____3’ 2"_ ] [ [ ] [ (WATER [ ] [HEATER) 7’5" ] [ [ ] [ [ ] [_____________12’4"_______________ Height = 10 ft. My apologies again for the diagram here but I am a Mac user and was not able to use smartdraw (any other free options to mac users for a similar program?) So, for anyone who would be interested in consulting me about this room I would hope that they would use the terribly organized photos on my website. As one will see, we have installed a 8'x8'x10" drum riser and yesterday we installed 4 8'x20' theater curtains to cover the wall of domestic junk. There is also a dropped ceiling that is 3'x3' next to the water heater enclosement which is not drawn in my diagram but which can be seen in the photos. I have had my nose in Everest books and what I am looking to hear from some of the fellowship is what I should be looking for as far as room modes and any other trouble spots that I should aware of. We will be recording rock (the DW kit) to jazz (the old school Ludwig) drums and would like to have a room that is pretty consistent and does not have to many hot frequencies. Any feedback is welcomed. I think this room has some potential as there are not many parallel surfaces and with the curtains, the room is significantly less wild. I would also love to hear some advise as to what I should do with the water heater room and if that is going to be too much of a problem as well. We do not have much money, well we actually have nothing, except for these trees that we are growing in hopes money might fall from, but other wise we have very limited capabilities to go out and spend money on treatments. The thing is though, we are resourceful and will make the most out of any recommendation. If there are any questions please let me know and I understand if there is more information needed I will do my best to relay what I can. Again thank you to all on the forum and I look forward to hearing your responces- Nick
it appears my diagram has eaten itself, ummm. Let me see what I can do hear...damn it, the basic dimensions are two rectangles. One is 21'x12'4"x10' (the long wall that now has the curtains on the 21' side) The other is a small rectangle that surrounds the water hear at that has dimensions starting with the long side at 14'6"x 3'x2". I am so sorry about the diagram, the curse of the amatuer! But do please check out the photos on the website, at least I think those are working and if the don't let me know will ya? THANK YOU
Try macdraft So what is your goal? a Control room and Live room or just a Drum/live room. 2nd what is behind the wall in this photo: Bryan Giles

This is only a drum room, the control room is a whole other story and thread... Behind the wall to right is another garage, to the left is exterior wall. Thanks for the thinking-NS
Ok, well you have read all the forums and the SAE site for basic info on wall construction, etc...??? The rest for you is treatments, various angled walls, etc... Visit the Studios under construction page and take a gander at some of the various live room diagrams to get a hold of the basics, then ruff up an apporximation on a graphics program. We will be glad to help you after you have tossed around a few ideas of your own. :) You seem to have a decent ht ceilign (10' I am jealous. LOL) ceiling. So you have some options there, Clouds, etc.... There is a lot to absorb, but it is not as difficult as it seems. Bryan Giles You have a very nice sized room to work with so dont skimp on the bass trapping ;) You might want to consider making an ISO room as well you have so mch room you can have 2 nice sizxed ISO rooms including the Large Live Room. You could have a Live room which would be a nice on drums and a DEAD room for that super up close and personal vocal or whatever and then your balanced dead/live Main Room. So many options, just some thoughts :)
