Hi all-
Planning on building an iso-booth based on the Sayers' design from the top of this forum and have a few questions about the resonators in the corners.
1. How are the slats attached to the frames? With anything other than nails? Do they also need caulking or anything to prevent unwanted vibration?
2. From what I'm reading in the Gervais book, the size of the slats depends on room modes, etc. So the only way to figure that out is to build the room and then test? Is there an accurate way to figure that out in advance during the design phase?
3. How much of a trade off would it be to just side step this whole issue, not worry about resonators at all and just, say, fill up those corners with "super chunk" style bass traps?
Thanks

Hi david
1 It could be anything that can attached those slats but I can't think of anything else maybe glue
resonator can build from anything. Bottles can be resonator too. doesn't matter what it made from glass or plastic if you put insulation in the bottle it will absorb the frequency that it resonate
So, It doesn't matter how you build it or what it made from just make sure that the box is air tight only let air in through those gaps between slats.
2 If the booth is rectangle just use room mode calculator it will give you modal frequency and use Sayers's Helmholtz resonator calculator (Excel file) to calculate slats size. If it's not rectangle you'll need simulation software to predict modal frequencies
and you have to tune it while you're building it
3 depend what you're going to record in the booth. Vocal? just High frequency absorber would be enough even though male voice can have low frequency harmonic but not so strong. Guitar/Bass Amplifier? yeah some kind of low frequency absorber will be needed.
