have a room that was originally going to be a a storage / walking in area / possible iso-vocal booth. I though it was too small fro a control room and was going to do a live / control combo, But after analyzing what will be the dimensions after the drywall and treatment gets put on 5ft by 7ft by 9.5ft . I realized that this room has a perfect loudin 1 : 1.4 : 1.9 ratio. My question is even though this room a has a golden ratio is it still to small to be used a control room? Or would it be ok? I do not mind working in small spaces just wondering about the acoustics.
First, you will have to wonder, how much time you would like to spend in a tiny space like that. As for the sound quality: I am not an expert, but good room ratios don't count as much as the negative effects of a size like that. Just sing in a small bathroom to find out why! ;-) Theoretically, the smaller the space gets, the smaller your RT60 should be tuned. At this size it will be impossible to tame the low frequencies, if you ask me. So, if you want to spend some time in this room and have an alternative, I would definitively go for that.
I agree with FriFlo: Ratios are only useful for reasonable size rooms. For very small rooms, even if the ratio is great, there just isn't enough room volume to get good low frequency decay, and the modal issues will extend way up in the low mid-range. That room might be OK for an amp isolation booth, but I wouldn't try to use it for a control room. - Stuart -
got it thanks! I will use it as a amp iso booth / storage space then.
