Hello everyone, I posted about a year ago when I thought I'd be building a much bigger studio in the Santa Cruz mountains. Plans have since changed quite a bit and I'm now planning on building a home studio in San Francisco. Thanks to those who responded to that post, I've since researched MUCH more and hope this post will be more thorough. :thu: My design is in our 2-car garage and I think I'm at the point where I'm ready to share the sketchup images of the frame. The aim for the studio space is to be able to record a full rock, funk, reggae etc. band, amps and drums at full volume at least during the day time without annoying our neighbors. Our house is in a residential area and the house walls are butted up against each other. One of our walls in our live room is up against our neighbor's wall. Specifically their hallway (at least in the front). Because we live on a hill though, our garage floor slab and house itself is probably 3-4 feet lower than our neighbor's (which I'm hoping should help reduce noise transfer at least some). A picture of our house and our neighbors is included. Our's is the teal'ish driveway. The design that is showed in Sketchup is INSIDE of the 2x6 walls seen in the picture of my garage. Those angled wall to ceiling supports are why the live and control rooms have their roofs shaped like that. The whole frame that I am constructing to in Sketchup is the inner dimensions that is open to construct in. ALSO the roof will be using 2x6's not 2x4's so that is a detail that needs to be changed. ALSO I am such a novice at sketchup I couldn't figure out how to do framing at angles so the roof in the live room is open for that reason. It's hard to see but there is a 3/4" air gap between the vocal booth and the live room. The gap between the live room and the controlling studio is 2 3/4 " Honestly those gap sizes are completely arbitrary, so let me know if they should be modified. Ok, I think that's most the information needed to get a feel for what I'm doing. If there is any info I left out that would be helpful please let me know. A few question's I have are: I know parallel walls in a tracking room is a problem for flutter echoes, If I bass trapped the corners of that rectangle at the end of the live room would I be ok? Or would it be better to actually construct the walls at a different angle? The long wall against the 2x6 existing wall in the live room is connected to the neighbors house on the other side. I'm considering a stagger stud wall for that wall to help keep noise transfer down. This is probably a good idea yeah? I'm planning on using double drywall and green glue already. But I think all the noise reduction I can muster is going to be helpful. I haven't designed to go around that pesky water pipe in what will be the live room wall, visible in the garage interior photo. Placing my wall out around it will eat into my live room's space more than I want. Would building a little column around that be feasible? If anyone wants I can provide the full Sketchup file. Thanks for your time, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I am going to run all these plans by structural engineers to make sure all construction is done properly, I just want to make sure the basic layout is proper. Once I get the basic frame approved I have a whole host of other questions I need to ask, but one step at a time! -Ari
