since green glue is a sound dampening glue would it work to screw 1x2's to the faces my 2x4's (that the drywall screws to) using green glue in the middle between them and then attach the dry to that? I can't see why this wouldn't work?

That isn't really correct. Despite the name, Green Glue isn't really glue at all: it does not stick things together: It also is not a general-purpose sound damping product: Rather it is designed for one specific type of damping, which is known as "constrained layer damping", or CLD. What that means is that it has to be held in between to large flat sheets or layers of some type of massive, flexible material, such as drywall, plywood, OSB, NDF or something similar. It works by damping a specific type of sound wave that would otherwise occur between the layers. Technically, it works by damping the sheer forces in the surfaces of the layers that constrain it. And it works really well at doing that, when used properly. But if you tried to use it between two studs that are nailed or screwed to each other, then there is nothing for it to work on! There are only very minimal sheer forces on the surface of a stud, practically non-existent, so there just isn't anything much that Green Glue would be able to do there. It isn't rubber, so it won't act like a resilient clip of some sort. It won't act like a spring, so it won't do what you are hoping it will do. It was never meant for that. What you need for that job is proper RSIC clips and hat channel, or alternatively proper resilient channel. Those are designed to do the job that you want done. - Stuart -since green glue is a sound dampening glue
ok thanks I bought some REAL cheap green glue (12 bottles) just trying to figure out how to best use in my build as I am only using 1 sheet of 5/8" dry wall on the inside (buy more to use it would be very expensive) as that is all I have calculated i would need with my decoupled 2 leaf wall where the 2x4's of each wall are offset from each other inside 2x4's are 24" centers outside decoupled wall 2x4's are 18" centers minimum 3" gap between walls r-13 fibrerglass in between and batts face the covered side of the walls. and 1/2" durock on outer walls.
Green glue will not work if you only have one layer of Sheetrock. Green glue is designed to be used between two layers such as Sheetrock. I suggest you take a look at their website for more detail or box it up and ship it to me
