I'm currently in a makeshift control room on a stage in an old vestry hall.
I have decided that I want to share the hall with the community as it's way too big for my projects.... it can still be my big live room, but also a multifunction / performance space! I'm in discussion with my architect about building a steel mezzanine gallery structure, with concrete floor, above the hall's entrance (utilizing the loft space above false ceiling) with entrance onto it from another room (through wall). This could house a decent control room and recording booths. Before we get into nitty gritty details I'd really appreciate your views on here with regard to wall systems / materials and layout.
The floor dimensions for the proposed mezzanine is 10m (W) x 3.40m (L). This is based within the A frames in the hall (between windows)... I could possibly push it to 4m (L)... but this will then put the A frame within the proposed rooms (in a decorative sense). Get it?
Height: If the mezzanine is at 3m from hall floor, this leaves about 4m to pitch... so proposed control room / recording booth will have irregular ceilings. Not sure on exact dimensions... need to go into loft to measure.
The entrance onto mezzanine would be from next door, through a 2ft granite wall. As it stands, I would do a corridor here, seperating two rooms for sound isolation. But as I only have roughly 3.4m to play with... I'm unsure about layout of c.room.
Current thinking:
A. Is it a good idea?
B. How can I make the most of sound isolation from hall? Need to make the space as multifuction as possible.
C. How should I layout the c.room with regard to view into booths. + where would door to c.room be?
D. Should I expand the 3.4m? Remember, there are windows in the hall... so need it to look ok too!
Really appreciate your help.
(1st pic of elevation: I imagine the control room in one room, and booth in other, seperated by corridor...)

Anyone? If my post is confusing... please let me know.
Basically, I need help with the c.room / booths / coridor layout on proposed mezzanine floor, and what type of walls? Blocks? Stud?
I'd like to help but I can't get the picture you have in your mind
I think it's good idea. The space you have could be interesting project and yes that hall would be a great live room.
Maybe draw us a rough layout and we can share our ideas.
Thanks Ken.
Of what you see in the photo in 1st post, the false ceiling with be removed. Taking the pitch of the hall to approx 9m.
Here's some very basic ideas. Excuse my lack of sketchup skills! The brown squares are traditional wooden A frames, holding the slate roof. From a decorative sense, these A frames, as well as windows, determine the dimensions of mezzanine. Of course... we could push the dimensions to the second window.... but rather excessive maybe??? And costly.
The mezzanine will have concrete floor of at least 4 inches. + floating floor for c.room / booths + extra floating ceiling undereath the mezzanine.
I'm unsure of:
A: Layout of rooms. (I like the idea of balcony over looking the hall)
B: What kind of wall system separating hall from these rooms. Blocks? Studding?
C: Windows for eye-line / view into rooms.
OK now I've got the picture what you have in mind.
A. My opinion idea 1 makes sense to me
B. Stud wall would be better choice
C. Windows are not big deal if you construct them right.
Lets see other member's idea and we can get into design later
Thanks Ken,
I like idea 1 too, but unsure about c.room layout. I understand that they should be layed out length wise, rather than width wise. If this is so, then putting the console facing the corridor/booths will limit access into c.room. Unless I put door on balcony???
Any suggestions out there?
