hey guys, I have a dilema. the garage I'm building in only has 1/2" plywood/felt paper/shingle for the ceiling. I've included a picture. the roof is brand new. what I need to know is if that ,with insulation of course, will qualify as one leaf of my dbl leaf ceiling. or should I insulate, then put a layer of 5/8 drywall up. I don't know if that will create a 3 leaf system or not. I don't want to waste the $$ and time to raise all that dry wall if it will not make things noticably better. what do you think I should do? thanks, DD

I don't know whats up with the picture sizing. I know nobody wants to scroll. if you can help me with this, please do. Thanks, DD
Hi sourrox, if your plywood "ceiling" is sealed and no air can pass in from outside the roof then perhaps you can call it a mass leaf already..but if it is not sealed then you would need to put two real leaves of mass with insulation between them perhaps, to achieve sound isolation. good luck
I inspected it close and it is not airtight. there are some gaps around the edges and at the seams where the ply sheets meet. I could patch it and caulk it but with it being just 1/2" ply I don't think it would stop much sound anyway. so drywall will go up this weekend. I'll try to post more pictures. if they aren't the right size, please let me know. thanks, DD
here are a few shots of my progress so far along with one which explains why I haven't done much this week. Iso floor framed and resting on neoprene.

here it is after insulation and 3 layers of plywood.

new door where there was no door before. not pretty yet but very solid and tight fitting.

WARNING!! utility knives can hurt you. this little slip cost me a few hours at the emergency room and a week of construction.

OUCH !! Isn't construction fun ! I stood on a big ass nail sticking out of a 2x4 on the ground - it went up into the base of my big toe and I couldn't walk for 3 weeks and it hurt for 5 months. The effort it takes to build a studio !
