Hello to everyone on this forum.
I have now probably the best opportunity for a long time to do a nice room with my mates for band rehearsals, recordings and hopefully also mixing.
I know already it's going to be a compromise in almost every aspect but let's try, shall we?
The place this room is going to get built is an old pcb factory, first floor. We are aiming to rent about 40-60m2 (430-645 sq. ft).
Concrete floors and ceilings, nicely done HVAC and power left over from the factory days so that's a good start.
It's now in a cleaned up state, about 100m2(1076 sq. ft) of empty space ready to start planning. We have almost free hands with the place. We'll sit down with the owner next week to talk about construction, how much space we're going to take etc.
So I thought I'd share this project here to first throw around ideas about floor plan, space requirement, door location, storage space ideas and so on.
We have a good grasp about construction techniques for sound isolation and acoustic treatment. This thread should be about basic design ideas.
The only things that are solid and can't be moved easily and therefore has to be taken into account are:
-ceiling height is 340cm (11.15'), ceiling has 10 cm (4") wide concrete joists every 60cm (2') that extrude down from ceiling bringing the ceiling height down to 300cm (9.8') at those points.
-there are concrete pillars at every 480cm (15.7') lengthwise as well as widthwise.
-because of the main HVAC ducts, the maximum width/length of the room is about 7.6m (25') or there will be significantly more work which we don't want.
First idea is to make a 5.2m (17') x 7.6m (25') room and start playing Tetris. This can vary both ways still.
Main idea is to squeeze every bit of functionality out of that space. Kind of like those Ikea example apartments "all you need for 4 person family in 35m2"
A live room to rehearse in, have storage for 8-12 guitar cases, drum cases, assortment of road cases, a small daw-setup with small decent monitoring somewhere, storage for all kinds of bits and pieces from vinyl records to guitar parts. You get the idea...
We could do the "drums on the other end, monitors in the other end thing", but that also wastes the whole width of the space for the monitors. Could there be some of other idea? Room divider on hinges to fake symmetry for listening position? Wall storage system that doubles as a diffuser/absorber?
If you have the time and are handier in sketchup than me, please chime in :)
I'll try to get something done in sketchup so you can visualize more easily.
