hey guys, need a little help building my studio thought this would be the place to go, (sorry for no sketch up cant get the hang of it yet, have it soon) it is a garage. about 75 ft from my house free standing not attached, im not too worried about neighbors, on the tighter side of a budget. started a little framing thats about it. dimensions 24 ft 8 inches wide by 38 ft 10 inches long with a 13 ft ceiling that is in the shape of a triangle (so its 13 ft in the center and gradually declines in height each side) approx 920 sq ft to work with. there are 2 garage doors with i know will affect and i do plan to take them down. i am mixing/recording anything from metal, indie rock to rap. mainly the first two. i live in fl and yes it is humid. i want a live room, bedroom and control room. some questions i have are .... 1. the floors are cement...should i get wood or stain them or? 2. what to insulate the walls with. 3. leave the ceiling open? (no drywall ceiling, or just leave the live room with the ceiling?) etc.... here are the pics (some pics are to show distance from neighbors) i apologize for the mess. thanks! [[
bump? i really need some help with this considering i have a contractor buddy wanting to help me for free just to put it in his portfolio and i dont want to start doing the wrong thing... info pleeeeeaaaassseee
Hi there Ryan, and welcome! :) Sometimes it can take a while to get a reply here on the forum: there's a lot of activity, and not too many people answering questions right now....

Nice! That's a pretty decent size place, and with nice high ceilings.

So HVAC will be a big part of your studio, then.

Stained cement can look really nice, and is excellent acoustically. Or if you prefer, you could use laminate flooring. In expensive, looks good, easy to install, and also very good acoustically.
2. what to insulate the walls with.
When you say "insulate", are you referring to the damping in the MSM cavity, or are you referring to the room treatment, once the isolation is finished?
3. leave the ceiling open? (no drywall ceiling, or just leave the live room with the ceiling?)
That depends on how much isolation you need. - Stuart -

how would one go about finding out how much insulation they need? i have started the "room within a room" walls, 2x4s screwed with tap com screws into the cement. as well as the walls. two 5/8" of drywall on each side screwed into the 2x4's. mineral wool insulation (whats the best way to apply mineral wool boards? just cut them a little big and wedge then in)

Those things are way too noisy for a studio. The recommendation for studio control rooms is around NC 20, and I totally doubt there is any window unit quite enough to even get close to that. Most people here use "mini-split" systems (which are much quieter), in combination with a ducted ventilation system. - Stuart -
