hello! I'm looking at a commercial space to move my studio and i have a few questions about the layout! attached is the link to a VERY quick sketch up model i did, swell as a flattened image. unfortunatly this is all the detail i can provide right now, (im going back early next week to view the space again) please excuse the fact that i didnt write dimensions ON the actual image (im working on a new computer and dont have annnny software to simply put text on an image) the top right room, which id call the live room, is 21w x 25'9" with a 3' by 9' chunk taken out of the bottom left corner, the control room (lower left room) is 13'7"w by 30'7"L. both have 10' ceilings, fake wood flooring on concrete. the other rooms are entry room, lounge, bathroom, vocal/guitar/dead room I've been reading this forum for years and like to think i know a bit about what ill need for absorption/diffusion but i do have some specific concerns about this specific space.. my concerns are, 1, is 30' really long for a CR? where the lines cross would be 38% from the front wall ish. my control room is tiny now, and I've never mixed in a treated long room like this/would be, and dont really know what to expect 2, notice the bottom right corner of the CR, the wall splays INWARD 2'5", starting 9'9" from the rear wall, which all lines up almost exactly where my left monitor will pointed, will the slanted wall really smear my mixing? if so what can i do to correct it? 3, the live room is missing insulation in the ceiling in a few places, so I'm working it into the lease that i fix that issue/make the ceiling how i want, and I'm thinking about doing an inside out ceiling to gain a little more height (if the duct work allows, going back this week to climb up and look and see if it'll work easily) my question is. if i do this….would it be beneficial to leave some drywall off of the corners of the room (but still insulate) so my entire attic area would be a bass trap? isolation is NOT an issue, the roof isn't metal and id have no neighbors. id only want to be isolated in the CR or a vocal booth. FROM the loud live room. even if i dont end up going inside out, is this a good idea? 4. besides the parallel walls , and the need for broadband panels, the 40 bass traps i have in my current space, and some diffusion…..am i doing ok with starting dimensions? i put the room dimension into some room calculator and the CR said "good for CR" but i didn't understand all the numbers really, (but the bonello curve thing looked good! i think! haha) sorry for my kinda stupid questions! and thanks!! :D Sketchup link https://www.dropbox.com/s/6azqosrpsbew7 ... io%202.skp :D :D :D :D have a great day!

1, is 30' really long for a CR?
It might be, or might not. More than the length, I would look at the room ratio, the floor area, and the total room volume. If they all pan out, then 30' is fine. It means you will have modal support down to very low frequencies, which is good, provided that the spread is smooth and even. It also means you probably can use diffusers in the room, which is also good.
2, notice the bottom right corner of the CR, the wall splays INWARD 2'5", starting 9'9" from the rear wall, which all lines up almost exactly where my left monitor will pointed, will the slanted wall really smear my mixing? if so what can i do to correct it?
I wouldn't worry about that too much. It is all the way back at the rear of the studio, where symmetry is not so important, and the angle is slight. Just put a large bass trap in the corner, and then use the rest of the angle for some type of broadband treatment: A slot wall comes to mind...
doing an inside out ceiling ... if i do this….would it be beneficial to leave some drywall off of the corners of the room (but still insulate) so my entire attic area would be a bass trap? isolation is NOT an issue
Then why bother putting up an inside out ceiling, if you don't need one at all? Maybe I missed something there....
the 40 bass traps i have in my current space,
You have 40 bass traps in a room? How did you manage that, when there are only 12 corners in a room? :)
i put the room dimension into some room calculator and the CR said "good for CR" but i didn't understand all the numbers really, (but the bonello curve thing looked good!
Yes, but the bonell graph is only part of the picture! You seem to have missed this part
- 1.1w / h < l / h < ((4.5w / h) - 4): Fail - l < 3h & w < 3h: Fail - no integer multiple within 5%: Fail (ratio3 = ratio1 * 3)
In other words, your room fails all three of the BBC tests for rejecting a room as a critical listening room. You'd need to cut the length down to 18'8" to get a good ratio and pass all the tests.
sorry for my kinda stupid questions!
Not stupid at all! It would only be stupid if you didn't' ask them! - Stuart -
