Hi all!
I want to build a new studio from scratch.I've never done something like this and as I don't want to mess it up I thought it would be best to ask the pros :-)
I made some drawings in sketchup but due to the fact that I'm a totally rookie, this is the best that I can come up with
What do you think about this? Could this work?
In the back of the console I wanted to make a QRD and some bass traps but I had no idea how to draw this...so I also attached a drawing of the "empty room".
maybe someone has another idea how I could set it all up. I wanted to flush mount the speakers but as there's a door in the corner of the control room I didn't see any possibility to flush mount them.
Thank you in advance for any help I can get :-)
Cheers
Tom
studio build - would this work?

Hi Tom. Welcome! :)
There are several issues with that design. First is symmetry: the room must be symmetrical with regard to your head. In other words, the left side must be a mirror image of the right side. If not, then the EQ and time-domain response of the left and right sides is not the same, and your mixes will not translate well. Your layout shows the console offset to the left.
Next, the speakers should aim down the longest axis of the room, not across the short axis, as you show. You want as much distance as possible between the speakers and the rear wall.
Third, your head should be a long way form the rear wall. The ideal position is that your head is about 38% of the distance from the front wall to the back wall. In your current layout, your head would be way too close to the back wall.
You could fix all of these by simply rotating the layout 90° to the left. :)
You will definitely need bass traps, and lots of them. Small rooms need a LOT of bass trapping. But forget diffusers: that room is too small to be able to use QRD diffusers successfully. Once again, you need a lot of space between the diffuser and your head, and there is not enough space in that room. Numeric-based diffusers can only be used if the room is large enough. Most home studios are not.I wanted to make a QRD and some bass traps
Flush mounting is an excellent idea, and once again if you turn the layout 90° to the left, then you would probably be able to do that. - Stuart -I wanted to flush mount the speakers but as there's a door in the corner of the control room I didn't see any possibility to flush mount them.
Hi Stuart,
thanks for the early and helpful reply! So let´s forget about diffusors.
I already thought about that design you wrote, but I saw some problems coming.
If i´d rotate the whole design 90° to the left, i need to build a roof slope to be symetric, right?
What would be the best way to do this? Sheetrock with insulation in it?
But then there will be problems with the recording booth window, because the new roof slope woud be in the middle of the window. And the same problem in the back with the door then.
The second problem would be the corner in the back where the door is. I can not place any base trap or big absorption panels here because of the space for opening the door.
What do you think about it and how do you think I could solve this?
Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated! :thu:
Cheers Tom
Hi again :-)
I just tried to make a new drawing in sketchup with the design rotated 90°.
I hope you can see everything.
on the right side of the console (door side) I added a slope with "cuttings" for the window and the door.
Is this the way I should go? If yes what material would be best do build that "new fake slope"?
Should I use two layers of sheetrock with insulation behind it or would it be better to use the lost space....like an absorbtion unit or something similar?
Or would it be better to fit one windowpane into the slope and the other one into the wall behind the slope?
Cheers
Tom
Hey, That's great design for your studio which you have shared here. The layout with [SPAM REMOVED BY MODERATOR] of studio design shows that you have used the space very nicely. It is very nice and I can say that It will surely works.Hi all!
