Great forum, I have learned a incredible amount from it as I have quietly progressed with my mix room build. Now, the time has come where I need to start asking a few questions. I have not posted until now as I have found that with enough research I have been able to answer my own questions without bothering everyone else so far. :D
With 10.6 ft width I don't have room to build angled walls. As it is I have a rectangular box nearing completion.
Measures 19ft x 10.6 ft x 7.8 ft
I have been torn since I started this project 9 months ago on if I will flush mount my monitors or not. I'm at the point where I really have to make a decision. The speakers are quested H108's that are front ported and are passive so I have no real issues on that front.
I'm thinking I simply build the soffit structures straight across the room corners as they are, and leave the walls either side as they are, non angled. Is this ok? Of all the pictured I have seen of people flush mounting I can't remember seeing anyone using non angled walls.
Lastly, does the top part of the soffit structure need to be sealed? Normally it would be by default for most people as you have a hard ceiling the framing runs up to. In my case however, I have joists of 6 inch depth I'm leaving open to fill and cover for bass trapping / reflection control. Will I have to make a lid to go under the joists to seal the structure? Thanks very much , all feedback greatly appreciated.
do people flush mount monitors and NOT angle side walls?

Hi. Please read the forum rules for posting (click here). You seem to be missing a couple of things! :)
Why not? Seems big enough to me. John managed to build a studio inside a shipping container with angled soffits, so I don't see why 10 feet is not enough space for that. With 10.6 ft width I don't have room to build angled walls.
For the best possible sound from your speakers, with the fewest possible artifacts coming form SBIR and other issues, then soffit mounting is the way to go, hands-down, no questions asked.I have been torn since I started this project 9 months ago on if I will flush mount my monitors or not
:) Yup. There's a reason for that! Everyone angles there soffit faces, because there's no other way to do it. If you don't angle your soffit faces then you cannot angle your speakers either, so they won't be aimed at your ears: you cannot get the correct speaker geometry ("triangle") if you don't angle your speakers, and if you do angle your speakers then you have to angle the soffit faces as well.I have seen of people flush mounting I can't remember seeing anyone using non angled walls.
If ti cannot go up to the ceiling then it does need a lid, yes. If not, then you are sort of defeating the purpose of the soffit.Lastly, does the top part of the soffit structure need to be sealed?
It sounds like you are planning to build your inner-leaf ceiling "inside-out"? That's one way of doing it. Another is to build it "conventionally" and just hang a cloud for reflection / flutter echo / modal issues. - Stuart -I have joists of 6 inch depth I'm leaving open to fill and cover for bass trapping / reflection control.
